buying in nassau and moving to suffolk
DH always lived in Nassau and I always lived in either Nassau or Queens. When we started looking at houses, we wanted to stay in Nassau really badly. We looked mostly in Levittown but Levitt houses did not fit our criteria of having a basement. I also am not a fan of the layout (personal preference). We reluctantly expanded our search out east and found that we could get SO MUCH MORE bang for our buck. We ended up purchasing in Ronkonkoma and for the same price as some of the outdated levitt houses we saw, we have a 12 y/o house with more room, a deck, a basement, a pool, central air, an attached garage AND our taxes are around 8k as opposed to the 10k+ we were seeing in Nassau. DH worked in Garden City up until February (got laid off and now works in Hauppauge) and I work in Melville.
ETA: Oh and I get to see this view pretty much every night on my way home!

I'm a Suffolk girl, always have been, but wanted to add I'm on a half acre, we have a 3br colonial, and our taxes are 7k. I think I'm in a pretty good area! You without a doubt get so much more out here! And you can still be in a nice area!

Re: buying in nassau and moving to suffolk
From what I have seen, Suffolk prices are a good amount lower for a similar house ($50-150k cheaper), the taxes are dramatically lower as well depending on the town ($3-10k cheaper), and in most cases you get a larger lot size. The biggest downside IMO is commute, both for work and family, but that is very situation specific. If that wouldnt be prohibitively high I would def say to consider suffolk! For us, we know we could save a lot and in many cases get more in suffolk, but we can afford to stay in nassau and the commute-related issues are keeping us here at least for now.
