Buying out a car lease...has anyone ever gotten the price knocked down?
We have a Mercury Mountaineer. The lease is up in July and we are going to buy it. They gave us the buy out price on our lease but wondering if I contacted Ford, if they would knock down the price a little considering Mercury isn't even in business any longer.
My parents have bought out a few leases through Chevy and they have been able to get the buy out knocked out successfully a couple of times. Wondering if Ford does the same?

Yes they do.. My SIL did it. Honda also knocked down the price for me but I decided not to take the offer. All dealers are doing so. I would suggest allowing the negotiator work out the deal with the dealer. Sometimes they can act like jerks. G/L FM if you have any questions.

The residual value of the car is usually pretty set.
You can try.

Depends on the car. Some car still hold a great residual value.
My CRV was so low mileage and still in "high" demand that they would not give me a deal at the end of the lease. They actually took it early to sell it asap because it was in excellent shape after 3 years and under mileage.
You can always try. It does not hurt.

Well I think I may be a good candidate for a few reasons:
1) Mercury is out of business, although I'm not sure how much that matter 2) I'm over mileage 3) With gas prices high now and people downsizing, I am sure it's not a high demand SUV

I had a friend who got a great deal on her SUV because it was a 2 doors and not 4. It would have been a turn off for most buyers since a 4 door version existed.
You can always make your case. They can say no or they can say yes.

Did you contact the dealership or did you contact the car company directly? How did you negotiate with them?

If the buyout price is less than the retail value of the car (what the dealer can resell the used car for) then they won't negotiated. However if it's the opposite then most companies will negotiate a little. You can check the value on the Edmunds, Kelly Blue Book or Nada websites.
