Buying Tickets as a gift...
What are your thoughts??
We received tickets for specific date and time with the people who gave them to us. Unfortunately, it's for the night at the end of my vaca, so the next morning I get up at the crack of dawn! On top of that, it's something that's just "eh" to DH and I, nothing special.
I don't know if I'm weird or not, but I would never buy tickets for someone unless I knew they were available at that day and time and had some interest in the event.
**It's just odd that the tickets were given as a gift, but they bought tickets for themselves as well so we would attend it together**

Yeah, hmm. I'd be worried that if I bought that for someone they'd be busy or wouldn't want to see the show. I only bought tickets one time for my parents knowing that they were available and really wanted to see The Police. Other than that one time, I haven't done it for that reason.

Re: Buying Tickets as a gift...
Whenever we've been given this kind of gift, we were told in advance and asked for a date that would work for us.

I think the gift giver should discuss this with the recipient or give them a gift certificate to broadway.com or something.

Re: Buying Tickets as a gift...
It definitely seems like a nice gesture -- maybe they got a deal on them and figured you could join them?
But I have only bought tickets for someone else, unless I know for sure that they can attend and are 100% available.

Re: Buying Tickets as a gift...
Yeah, no advanced warning or verification that we would be available. Regardless of whether were were or not, since MIL gave it, DH would insist the world stops for her so it wouldn't matter...any advice on approaching this since DH def didn't and won't say anything for the future??

Re: Buying Tickets as a gift...
I've bought tickets as a gift before, but only for DH, my parents or my sister...all people who I either know their schedule or I can be sneaky about it and get the info from other sources.
Anyone past that...it's too hard to coordinate IMO, unless you have the person's SO in on all of the details. Or at the very least, ask if they're free that night, and if they are, just say "you gotta save the date!" and leave it at that, until I give them the gift.

I've done this for my parents but I always check the date with them... I wouldn't just assume someone was available... I think a Ticketmaster GC is a better way to go in these situations.

Re: Buying Tickets as a gift...
I always think it's a nice gesture, but I think the gift giver should do better planning. DH's aunt always got us tickets for broadway shows (the entire family) and it was great, so generous of her. The last one I couldn't go to was because I was travelling for work. I can't just not go, but she expected this of me.
