Calorie intake per day?
Whats the norm for the amount of calories I should be eating per day? I need to lose 10lbs (its not coming off easily) and I'm wondering if I may be eating too much or too big portions? tia

This seems very very low to me. How tall are you?
It goes by your height, how many lbs you want to lose a week etc- you can find a calculator on sparkpeople.com or livestrong.com

I am 5'6. I know it was a low # but we were trying to lose a lot of weight before my wedding and I was struggling. As long as you are eating the right foods in that 1,000 calories. Some veggies some fruits some protein and fiber, it was okay.

Sorry but 1000 calories is WAY too low. The absolute minimum anyone should be eating is 1200 cals and that number should be more if you workout.
Eating 1000 cals for a long period of time will eff up your metabolism. Not only that but that is not something you can sustain - period! You will lose weight but eventually that weight loss will stall and you will gain it all back as soon as you start eating normally.
I like dailyplate.com You can plug in your info and it will tell you how many cals to eat a day.

It wasn't for a long period of time, it was to jump start the weight loss for a few weeks. To tell you the truth I felt amazing when doing it and had a lot more energy. I am not saying that you should consume that little as a normal diet. But a diet is a diet and you need to reduce your caloric intake.

Re: Calorie intake per day?
You need a minimum of 1200-1300 calories a day to function. Less than that is just not healthy. Even for a couple of days.
This calculator here gets you your BMR: BMR Calculator. This is how many calories you require per day to be alive; basically, if you were in a coma, this is how many calories a day you would need to maintain your current weight. Let's say yours is 1450. So, eat 1450 calories a day, and on a normal day of going to work, doing some light chores around the house, etc., you'll burn, say, 1900, and have a deficit of 550 calories for that day. 6 days like that, and you'll lose one pound. Add exercise into the mix, and you'll increase your calorie deficit and lose it faster.

Re: Calorie intake per day?
Wow - I am REALLY surprised that a PT would tell someone to eat only 1,000 calories. That is starvation! Especially if one is working out. Every trainer I know always says "eat more"
To the OP: I would just measure what you eat. If you have a sensible diet now, between 13 and 15 hundred, then I would say you are OK. It takes 12000 just for the body to work and that doesn't even include moving! So You should at least be eating that. I would suggest you load up on your lean proteins and your veggies. Watch your sugar and try to limit your carb intake to once a day (I don't include my oatmeal for breakfast as a carb). Also, have you tried switching up your workout routine. Try some HIIT on the tread or on the bike. And maybe increase your weights with your weight training.
Good luck!

Re: Calorie intake per day?
per sparkpeople, I wanted to lose 10lbs and I was 125lbs, so I wanted to get down to 115 and they suggested I eat 1200-1400 calories per day and exercise 5 days/week for 1/2 hr alternating strength & cardio.

Yes, you have to reduce your caloric intake to lose weight but the best way to do it is through a combination of both diet and exercise. You don't want to take so many calories away that you are starving and you don't want to spend all your time in the gym either.
It really doesn't matter how long you do it, 1000 calories is simply not enough. If your body doesn't get enough nutrition and you are working out, it will resort to eating it's own muscle which is not what you want to do. Muscle is active in the sense that it will continue to burn calories after your workouts are over as opposed to fat which is inactive. It's in your best interest to BUILD muscle to boost your metabolism.
I am sorry but I would really reconsider going by what your PT is telling you
