Re: Camel Crickets...

I don't know how to get rid of them but those things seriously freak/gross me out. My Aunt used to have them I think she got an exterminator.

Re: Camel Crickets...

glue traps for crickets

leave them out

if you catch one, leave the dead body in there

they are attracted to each other and will go to eat the dead ones and you will catch any others that way

also run the dehumidiifier as they are attracted to dark moist places

I HATE THEM!!!!!!!!! I had never seen one before I moved to Nassau county and lemme tell you they are the most horrifying things IMO. We were going to get an exterminator this year to get rid of them. Should I start now????? Do exterminators not work for these??

Re: Camel Crickets...

do you mean Cave Crickets? If so my mother in law has them in her basement. She recently had her house sprayed and we have not seen them since. Call an exterminator

Yes! They completely freak me out! We're in RVC and in talking to our neighbors, everybody has them! We've just been using glue traps but if they get bad again, I'm going to get an exterminator.

I have them and they are SCARY!!! I live in Seaford, north. I had my husband do laundry for a month cause I wouldn't go downstairs!!! He bought sticky traps and stuff that he sprinkled in the basement that (hopefully) killed them. I haven't seen them this winter, but I heard they start to come back in the springtime. I will ask him what it was that he sprinkled.

Re: Camel Crickets...

Thanks everyone who responded. Yes, camel crickets are also known as cave crickets and they are the most evil bug on the planet IMO!!!

We live in Bellmore and only saw about 10 since December. It is my understanding that they really make their presence known in the spring/summer months, especially if there is a large population Chat Icon ew omg i couldn't imagine seeing more than one at a time!!!!!

We had 2 last night (on separate trips down) and I have had it!!! I called my exterminator this morning and they want $75 each time they come for a "service." The "service" is glue boards, but I just don't see how that will solve our problem and I don't want to have to spend $75 each time they come. I think we'll have this one "service" and talk to the exterminator and see if he has any other suggestions and then try to tackle it ourselves. I am so scared of them, I had never seen them before we moved to Bellmore but I hear sooo many people have them so I was hoping there would be some "miracle cure" for them. Chat Icon GET OUT OF MY HOUSE CAMEL CRICKETS!!!

If anyone has any suggestions at all please please let me know I would appreciate it so SOOO much!!!!!Chat Icon

We've had them since we moved into this house 10 year ago! And our neighbors all complain about them too! I never remember my parents basement having them while growing up though!

Some years are worse than others. They tend to come out when it's dark, so if I am going to be doing laundry down there at night, I leave all the lights on! They are so fast and can really jump, so I've stopped trying to attack them with the broom.

My DH puts down a strip of duct tape (sticky side up!) all around the edge of the foundation (we still aren't sure how they get in or where they hide out). It works great! We are still doing construction work down there, so if we still get them once we are finished, we will look into an exterminator, which we haven't done yet because we have 2 small children.

Re: Camel Crickets...

my parents have them in their basement in western nassau county. I was living in the basement when I started to see them in october 2004. they are gross. my parents have only been able to kill them by using glue traps. i used to spray them, but since they jump they avoid being sprayed.

We get them in our unfinished basement, mostly in the laundry room and the room where the boiler is and it's gross! I hate bugs! We have glue traps for them.

Yup, they're in Nassau, they are awful and they will jump at you if you come near them as a line of defense. (we did a ton of reasearch on them b/c we had such an infestation in our basement two years ago.)

Definitely get a dehumidifier and seal any and all cracks or holes you have in your foundation with that expanding foam.

We used bug spray to slow them down (it stuns them for a moment) for a while so we could kill them but we found out last year that they would see something coming at them from the sides but if we held a flip flop directly above them and dropped it straight down, it killed them instantly. They never had a chance to jump away b/c I don't think they can see it coming from above them. LOL, I know it sounds ridiculous but we tried everything to avoid them jumping at us. Those suckers can jump high!

I'm praying they aren't as prevalent this year. Here's hoping.....Chat Icon

Re: Camel Crickets...

Add me to the list. I have them in my basement. They seemed to really come in last fall when it started getting colder out. I squish them when I see them - IF i can get to them. But I swear these things are like the size of a small child and can leap buildings in a single bound!

I'm going to try glue boards even though I hate them because they are cruel Chat Icon

we live in seaford and got them in our basement the first year we were in our house. they showed up at the end of summer. but we called terminix and ever since they started coming (they come 4 times a year to spray outside now) we have not seen them again. thank god because those things really freak me out!!! big glue traps will help a lot until your get an exterminator in.

Re: Camel Crickets...

We had them in my parent's finished basement (where my room was) when I lived at home. They look scary but are actually harmless. I caught them in cups and took them outside (I try not to kill anything). The glue traps are pretty cruel. If anything, I would see if you can find a spray to repel them or call an exterminator that will spray. Good luck!
