Camera experts - p&s cameras that look like DSLR
I am in the market for a new camera. I have a casio exilim ex-z60 that my dad gave me for xmas a few yeas back. it is only 6 mps. It was great when I first got it but now the quality is just not cutting it. I was never a camera/picture person but now that I have DS I really want to get into it more. DS will be 1 yr old next week and I already feel like I have missed so many pictures of him due to my crappy camera.
Ideally I would love to get a DSLR but our budget just can not handle that right now. So I am looking to get a REALLY good point & shoot. I am hoping to not spend more than $300.
In doing searches online I am finding p&s cameras that "LOOK" like a DSLR but they are not. they cost about $300.... Can anyone tell me what the difference this makes? Do these types of cameras give better quality pictures than the slim/small/cute p&s ones? Are they worth it?
ETA: for example
Canon High-End Advanced Digital Cameras
OR THE Nikon CoolPix L100, P90 or P6000?
ETA: I bought the nikon s203 from target online on thanksgiving for $88 but this model is nowhere to be found on the nikon website. Doing somemore research online i have found some reviews that it maybe a low quality "black friday model"

I have the Canon Powershot sx120IS, which is one of the ones in that link you posted.
The benefits for me were that it has manual controls (I have a film SLR so I kinda sorta know how to use these), and a 10x zoom,
The major drawback with this model is that it takes the flash a really long time to recharge between shots. I was however able to take some decent indoor shots without the flash.
Other differnces are that it still isn't as fast as an SLR, and you can't change lenses. That is the case with any of thse types of "mid range" cameras.
The G10 & G11 are supposed to be really good, but I felt like if I was going to spend that much I should look at SLRs, but I didn't want one b/c I have a film SLR & didn't want to two big cameras.
ETA- this camera has also gotten good reviews if you don't need as much of a zoom. Canon s90

Thanks for replying. I woul dhave no idea how to do the manual stuff ( but I would love to learn!) I really would like to be able to snap away and good shots of my son. Especially since he will start walking soon..... I guess for that I would have to go the DSLR route right? I think I may ask for money or giftcards for xmas so I can have help getting a DSLR....

If you think you may upgrade soon, then maybe you be better off getting a dSLR, but keep in mind that when you take him to the park & stuff , you'll have to lug that around along with all the usuall baby paraphenalia.
Personally, I wouldn't spend the money on an SLR unless you knew how or were going to learn how to use at least some of the different settings.
What I like about my camera is that when I play the pictures back, I can set the display, so I can see what settings were used to take it, which makes it easier to learn than with my film camera.

IMO, I would just save up to get an SLR.
I got one last Christmas and I wish I had had it when my DS was younger...but it is a must as they get older...
Also, in August, Best Buy had that Nikon D40 for $499, to me, the difference between spending $300ish and getting a p&s that you may have to replace in a year or two, and getting an SLR which is a true investment is a better idea, KWIM?

Yea this is what I am thinking now too.....Dell has the Nikon D3000 SLR Digital Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens on sale for $499 right now.... that is the new beginner one right? I am going to head to the store to see if Ic an hold and play with one of these. I am just scared to spend so much on a camera.
I really would like to learn how to use a DSLR, but I would probably keep a P&S around too for convenience.
Thanks Ladies!!!!

Tthe biggest benefit of DSLR over P&S is the continuous picture taking available with DSLR. As your son starts to walk you will want those shots. I have the Nikon D40-we used it like a p&S for a year but are starting to learn how to use the manual settings now. I've still taken some cool pics though
