Camera question-6 mega pixels vs 10
I have a choice between two SLR cameras, either the Sony A200 SLR (10.1 mp) or the NIkon D40 SLR (6.1 mp).
If it was the 10 mp Nikon D40, I would get that, no question, but it's not.
If you had you choice, which would you get?
I hear great things about the Nikon, but am wondering if I should go for the Sony because it has more mega pixels.

I'm not familliar with Sony but I'd still stick with Nikon.
If this helps you decided at all, all of the photos I've posted so far are shot on a 6.1 megapixel Nikon D70. The only time it would matter is if you are enlarging higher than a 20x30.

Re: Camera question-6 mega pixels vs 10
In terms of the 2 brands, while Sony is great, I'd go with Nikon. The idea behind MP is that the more mp the camera has, the larger the print you can create while keeping the sharpness and resolution. Most of us will only blow up a picture to an 8x10 size, maybe 11x14. I personally don't know anyone who has made a print larger than that from their own camera. Now, a 6 mp camera will easily make great pictures and you'd still be able to enlarge them to those sizes.
Now, 2 things to keep in mind:
1-cropping does affect photo quality, so if you do go with the 6 mp camera and tend to not only crop pictures but also enlarge the cropped image, you would then start to see resolution issues. But I'm talking zooming in on the picture and cropping, not shaving off edges.
2-what are your plans with the camera down the road? Do you expect to NEED a 10 mp camera or is this camera strictly for your own personal use?

I am bias to Nikon. However I personally think Sony should stick to TV's and such and leave camera's to the pros. The guys at the camera shop I go to have nothing good to say about the Sony Alpha series.

I agree with the previous poster - stick with a camera made by a camera company.

Thank you all so much-Nikon it is. The reviews on DPReviews for the Nikon were really good and make it sound like the best bet for a novice like me.

Your photos were the inspiration for my hope to go SLR some day, so it helps a lot.
Thanks everyone!

It is just for my own personal use-thank you so much for clarifying about the megapixels-that makes a lot of sense.
