camping with small dog

ok, this might sound ridic but bare with me. I'm taking my pomeranian pup camping with me and the fam this weekend in the Catskills. I know we will be doing some hiking on trails so I was wondering which of the following do you think is less ridiculous:

getting him booties so he can hike with us but not cut his tiny paws.

Or getting one of those backpack doggie carriers and carry him with us on the hike.

I really want him to walk with us but his feet our so small I know he'll cut them.

and don't worry about distance- I've taken him on 2 mile runs before, so he can handle the time walking.

Re: camping with small dog

i think the booties are impractical. if he is not used to them already, he will spend his time fussing and trying to get them off

i also think the idea of carrying/dragging a carrier through hiking trails is impractical.

i don't mean to be a downer, but overall it doesn't sound like a good idea. can you lock the door of the camper and leave him in there while you go hiking?

edited: i just realized that the carrier is a backpack - that actually may not be a bad idea!

I agree. The bootie thing takes some getting used to. I had to put them on my crested for a few minutes a day for several weeks before she would not try to chew them off, then it took an additional month for her to walk comfortably in them......

The backpack looks great. I also have used a portable water bottle with an attached drinking vessel. The furkids love it.

Re: camping with small dog

I would just skip the booties. My mom brought her 10 week puppy hiking and he was fine. We did bring a pashmina and made a little sling so he could sleep in it. He liked it so I think the backpack is great. Just bring tons of water. The dogs drank all thier water plus all of ours. Chat Icon

Re: camping with small dog

i'd skip both.

if you absolutely HAVE to bring the puppy then i would have him walk on his own. if he gets tired, pick him up for a bit.

eta: dont even think about teh booties.. they take aLOT of getting used to, and they fall off.

Re: camping with small dog

i had to laugh when i saw the booties, they are so cute but as the others have said your dog probably won't wear them,
i think the backpack is a cute idea, as long as your dog is not to heavy, and think it'll be a little extra workout for you

Re: camping with small dog

ok, we went to look at the booties but Chip could not even walk in them, hehe. we decided against taking him on the hike, he stayed with my mom at the campsite. the trail was very rocky and hilly, he would have never been able to keep up.
