Re: Can a pediatrician kick a child out of their practice??

They can which is ridiculous IMO. There is zero science behind the vaccine schedule, none!
Our peds have fully supported our decision to space and delay. Neither of my children got MMR or chicken pox or Hep B until just before preschool. No one batted an eye. It's my kid, my decision.
Just like it is their business, their decision.

I totally get it.
If you are going to constantly go against the ped, it is better for both of you (not you, you but general you LOL) to find someone else!

Yep. It's not an emergency situation & there are plenty of pediatricians out there.

Yes my pediatrician will not treat a child who's parents refuse to vaccinate their child. She is very up front about it too. She will delay a vaccine if a child is sick, but other wise she sticks to the schedule which I love!
yes. my ped. told me this upfront. i happen to agree with him, and understand too, that for them it's probably a liability thing b/c they could infect other patients, or if the child did get the illness in which they were not vaccinated for, they could turn around and say the ped. didn't give it to them on time.

Re: Can a pediatrician kick a child out of their practice??
Yep they sure can. Mine threatened me. I had to explain my delay was only a few months not a few years, etc. Before that I called around and found only 2 other places I could go that would allow an MMR delay / modified immunization schedule.
Mine place is so strict they have postings as you walk in, when the children are weighed and in each examation room. I faught a hard battle with them, and thankfully won. But I only 'delayed' within the allowance of the CDC.
ETA: I just wanted to add. It was NOT because other kids are 'exposed' to the illness. I asked and they said they keep their facility as clean and steril as possible. Even WITH VACCINATION, you can pick up a virus or infection. So that had nothing to do with it. They still saw sick kids with vaccinations so obviously keeping the the sick out wasn't the point.
Their explanation to me was that the number of patients meant keeping files on all children on alternate immunization plans, dangerous. Since you can bring a child in who's ill they need to know what that child has or has not been vaccinated for. If its not the normal doctor and they aren't on a standardized plan, then its a guessing game, which can prove dangerous. Its a given that all children at a certain age or given certain vaccinations if they are on plan. So if you don't want the plan, go somewhere else, because they won't risk the idea of making a mistake on a file then overvaccinating or mistreating a child.
Further, the extra burdeon on the staff to treat children who have purposely avoided vaccinations puts an undue and unfair burdeon on the parents of sick children who are on plan. It taxes the group and the parents and isn't worth it to their philosophy of treating children.
THESE were their reasons to me.
AJ wasn't on plan. She was on MY plan or as I called it (The CDC's Plan) so given that and common illness (colds etc) she was delayed. Suited me fine.
Now that's she's 3, I had the discussion and again and her reaction was "Really only those first two years are important, the rest we can delay no problem" Because I'm delaying, splitting out the 4-6yr shots. I wanted a fair warning.
so go fig.

It is a business, I see no reason why they wouldn't be allowed to enforce this rule.

Re: Can a pediatrician kick a child out of their practice??
Mid Suffolk Pediatrics in Hauppauge tossed my DD after 2 for not having her MMR.
I wouldn't cave and went to a new practice.

Wow, I have no idea. I suppose, legally, they can refuse to just practice on anyone. I mean, we as parents, have the right to refuse shots. I don't know that a dr can stop treating a patient because they don't agree with our decisions.
To be sympathetic to the ped though, if a parent refuses vaccines and then brings in a child with measles, mumps, etc., they could infect newborns in the office who are not yet vaccinated.
ditto, my feelings exactly!!!

Re: Can a pediatrician kick a child out of their practice??
Like everyone else said, absolutely they can.
The only question I asked my ped (and the other that I interviewed) was their view on vaccines.
Just this weekend my pediatrician actually SUGGESTED TO ME that we delay the MMR for my DS who is now 15 months. I love that practice!!

Re: Can a pediatrician kick a child out of their practice??
Yes, they can.
Its a liability thing. If they suggest something to you, and you do not agree, and god forbid something happens to your child, they can be held liable.
You need to find a pediatrician who agrees with your philosophy AND who states that in writing to cover BOTH of you.
