Can I get the "Government Employee" rate for a hotel room...
If I'm a teacher? I get lower car insurance because they consider me a "government employee."

Re: Can I get the "Government Employee" rate for a hotel room...
I doubt it...I was a teacher and never got one before...
Now I work for the state, and I get a tax free form when I check in for WORK related things, and then get reimbursed after I pay for my hotel

You can always ask. Some places might do it.

Hmmm. DH is a government employee and we never thought about asking. I may look into this. I thought it was only for when they were on official business.

No, you cannot. My husband is in the military and sometimes we can't even get it. You need military orders to get that rate in a hotel.
We have tried several times to get the government rate with only his military ID and we cannot get it.

I am a Federal Gov't employee and I use the Gov't discounts all the time.
You do not need to be on official business. As long as the discount is available to ALL Federal Gov't employees you are permitted to use it.

You've lucked out then, I've tried in at least 5 hotels, I book it under that rate, and then they demand to see official business paperwork. They've never let it slide.

Re: Can I get the "Government Employee" rate for a hotel room...
Government is different than the State rate. I work for the State, and have used the State rate, only when on official business. They do occasionally ask for work papers and the tax exempt forms to prove on official business.
I don't think teachers are Gov. employees...If anything, state, but it depends on who signs your paycheck. Mine's signed by the Govenor.

I used to work for Starwood Hotels (W Hotels, Westin, Sheraton, Four Points, St. Regis, Le Meridien). No - you have to be a government employee and show valid gov ID at check in.

I do the same thing. I just show my ID and get the discount. Actually a couple of times they didn't even ask for it.

It depends on where you go and what hotel it is. Some, especially here in DC will not give it to you unless you are using a GSA issued credit card, which as you know, is only supposed to be used for official business.
Other hotels though, that are less informed abt the rules, will let you get the rate by simply showing your Gov't issued ID.
To the OP though, give it a try and see if it works.

I'm a federal employee, and we are strictly STRICTLY forbidden from using the government rate for personal affairs. You can only use it for official business...

Re: Can I get the "Government Employee" rate for a hotel room...
Let me make clear - even if a hotel will give you the government rate when you show your ID, the burden is not on them, but on you. As a federal employee, you ARE forbidden from using your ID to get discount rates on hotels and airfares for personal affairs. I just had training on this a few months ago. Our agency got slammed about a year ago from a VERY detailed investigation regarding personal use of government rates.

you aren't. you aren't supposed to use the rate for anything other than official business. but it doesn't' mean that people don't abuse the rules.

nope. they are employees of a school district, which even though funded by tax payer dollars, i think it would be a stretch to label them as "government" employees. "Govt employees" are people who work for a specific jurisdictional gov't, i.e., town, county, state, fed.

Where can I go to check this? I had no idea! When I book hotels - I click if it says government rate. When I get there, I show my ID. I thought it was like getting a government rate on car insurance or phone service?

the best thing I can tell you is to ask HR or if you have an ethics advisor (we do) ask him/her.
they tell us in no uncertain terms that using the govt rate for anything other than official business is prohibited, and flashing your creds for ANYTHING is also prohibited (ie, for getting out of a ticket or anything like that)
we do have other programs, with Tmobile, Apple etc. that provide a discount that we are able to use...but those that you are eligible for should also be made clear.

I am glad I found this out before leaving for Florida! Yikes.
Thanks for the info!
It is silly for me to "get in trouble" for this when the AAA discount is probably just as good! I just liked feeling important.
