Can I play devil's advocate here for a second: re BPA
How does anyone know that these new bottles are REALLY BPA free? Maybe they contain another chemical that would be released?
I didn't change my bottles and still wouldn't, but I know everyone else is and I was just questioning how anyone could be sure that these new bottles are any different?

I've actually thought about them too. I use drop-ins and the Born Free sippy cups for DS. Either way, I am not to concerned b/c I have neve put heated or even warm liquids in them.

I do think they are really BPA free. The plastic on a BPA free bottle looks different. It catches light differently. I do still worry about what is in all the plastics.

I would guess they have to go through an inspection of sorts and if they DID have it and were later caught, that company would be up the river.
I was not actually THAT concerned in the beginning but then I read some studies on how many COUNTRIES in the world do not allow it for yrs now in their baby products and was a wee bit upset at the US and decided to make a bit more concious effort to avoid it.
But you know Im green as can be anyway

Same here. I just figured with a new baby it's not that expensive to buy new bottles so I am. But I don't feel like I harmed my DD.

When the whole BPA thing broke again recently I was in a ripe panic. I breastfed - but when I pumped, I used Avent bottles and my milk was warmed in those bottles. So I called my ped and asked him if I did something damaging. He asked me if my mother ever gave me baby aspirin when I was little. And she did. St. Joseph's orange flavored. I thought they were candy and actually used to pretend to be sick so I could get them. And I never developed Reyes Syndrome. But now that we know the potential exists that Aspirin may call Reyes in children - I would NEVER give my kids aspirin products.
I did the best I could with what I knew then. I don't have a baby now - but if I had one I probably would buy the BPA free sort - just to be on the safe side. And in another year if they say those BPA free bottles contain ABC and shouldn't be used - well I'd probably switch again.
I don't think I damaged my sons. I hope there is no negative impact. But the truth is - in a few years it will be something else. Pink nail polish might cause ridged nails, blue jelly beans cause early male pattern baldness, McDonald's might cause this or tomatoes could cause that... in the meantime I just plug along.

Re: Can I play devil's advocate here for a second: re BPA
I know what you mean. I have been using the BPA bottles ever since my DS was born, but I was also wondering what else is in plastic that is not good. I actually think the best thing to use is glass, which is not always convenient for babies and toddlers.
You know the other day I was looking around my kitchen and realized that the magic bullet I use to blend my DS's food is plastic. I am sure that is not BPA free.
I just think we all have to do the best we can. Like other posters have said there is always a new scare of the month. Remember a couple of months ago it was Johnson & Johnson soap.
I actually think a lot of these bottle makers are just going to start eliminating the BPA. Then of course someone will find something else that is not good in the plastic. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! It is impossible to keep up with all of it.

I've thought about this too. But I really don't trust glass for breakage, so what other option is there?

Looking back - I should have bought them the first time this came out but didn't. Now, that Dr. Browns has the BPA free bottles I figured why not buy them?!

Re: Can I play devil's advocate here for a second: re BPA
I'm pretty sure they are BPA free since I doubt these companies would risk lawsuits for falsely representig their products. Its very likely that there are other chemicals that leach into the milk too. You can only deal with what you know. The BPA literature is very solid IMO and there are other options so I figure I may as well use them. I never heated bottles but I used to use the dishwasher and sterilizer. I no longer do that. I also don't microwave my own things in plastic anymore. These are small changes that barely have any impact on my life. I don't waste time worrying about it though. The overwhelming majority of exposed people will be fine but it never hurts to take precautions.

Re: Can I play devil's advocate here for a second: re BPA
I would never heat anything in plastic. Even before all of this came out. I have always hated plastic and that's why I used glass for my son. I will use plastic for cold things, never put something hot in plastic, etc. I've always felt that something from the plastic has to be getting in the food or whatever else is inside. I always thought it was common sense .

It's funny that you posted this today because this morning I was drying pump parts to take them to work and I noticed a "7" on two of the parts for my Medela pump.

Re: Can I play devil's advocate here for a second: re BPA
I agree - I recently posted something similar on pregnancy. if not BPA, there could be something else in the plastic. Glass is the way to go to avoid chemicals. But then you have to worry about the breakage. I am going to use a combo of glass and plastic and avoid heating the plastic ones.

Re: Can I play devil's advocate here for a second: re BPA
We can't predict the future so we can only go on what we know now. Could the bottle liners i used have some toxin in it, maybe. But i am going on the knokwledge i have now to protect my DS the best i can.
We can never know everything. And i am assuming that when the bottles i use say BPA free, that it went through testing to make sure they aren't. That is the best i can do. And i am satisfied with that
I personally don't understand why people wouldn't use BPA free bottles

Interestingly enough, in the UK this is a complete non-issue and I don't know anyone who knows anything about this issue.
I wonder why its such a HUGE hoo haa in the states, but not in other countries.

Do they outlaw it there as Canada is trying to do?

No, we use all the same bottles as you guys do, Dr browns, Avent, etc. But there has been NOTHING in the news, or really published anywhere about it. Its just a non-issue.

I do know that the UK Mantains that bottles have a level 5 times less then whats "allowed" to be safe.
as far as I know, the US never had this rule.
