Can someone explain the FP at Disney
Ok so I have to start making mine at midnight tonight. Couple of questions:
1) How do you figure out what time you want to do what? What do you base it off of?
2) Parade, Fireworks....do I really need to FP for that?
I know you can change things around when I get there, but want to have some plan of action when I log on later
Thank you

Can someone explain the FP at Disney
For me, since I already had my ADR's, I kinda planned around that. I tried to get the FP attractions I really wanted, and for as early as I could. Once you use the first 3, you can get more. I did a lot of changing around leading up to the trip and once in the parks.
As far as the parades, etc., we had one for the MK parade, and it came in VERY handy. We ate at Chef Micky's that night, so by the time we got on the monorail and headed back to MK, everyone was lined up several deep. It was very nice kinda pushing through everyone and having a designated spot to sit. My kids even got pulled up further to a special spot with a CM.

We only booked ours 30 days out since we were offsite so we weren't able to get them for the parade or the 7 Dwarfs Mine Train - so I would book fast passes for those if you can now.
It took awhile to get used to the new system (before I went) and booking them but, it was quite helpful. We had a basic idea of what park we were doing and which day we were going based on other reservations.
You can only book one fast pass an hour. We usually went in the mornings for rope drop so I planned mine early in the day and tried to do them in the same location at Magic Kingdom (like Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad on the same day).
We were offsite and I couldn't get them 30 days out for the parade or 7 Dwarfs Mine Train so I would get those if you can - you can move them around later.

I would book them all in the morning hours, that way you can utilize the kiosk to get more fast passes after you use your 3. If your last fastpass isn't until say 7pm, then there isn't much time for more FP.
I would not waste a FP on the parade or fireworks.

Re: Can someone explain the FP at Disney
We booked ours for the most popular rides and for as early as possible. I didn't use them for the fireworks, parades, meet and greets stuff like that. But we go to Disney often and those things weren't as important to us at all. After our FP were used we'd go to kiosks and try to get what ever we could get esp if it were close to where we were and a close time. A lot of the best rides were sold out of FP quickly even in a not too busy week which stunk. My kids really wanted to ride things like space mountain twice but it didn't happen. Space Mountain was all out of FP's and the line was pretty consistently 50 minute wait time the entire 2 days were were at MK at the end of August. We did get to ride all the rides at least once but did miss the old system!!!

ITA. Last time I went I booked like 3-4 weeks in advance and got FP for everything I wanted except the mine train. We also had a prime spot for the parades just getting there a little early.
