Can someone explain to me why formula "goes bad" after an hour
I don't get it. Is this something the formula companies tell us so we'll buy more formula? Is it really true? I even had a baby nurse tell me that she's used formula up to 4 hours after the baby first starts feeding from it...
Thanks!

Re: Can someone explain to me why formula "goes bad" after an hour
I'm curious to this as well.
It's also 1 hour of being left out. You can refrigerate it and it lasts longer... I believe mine says 24 hours.
But IDK why it goes bad so fast. I prefer breast milk... and one reason is that it lasts longer left out. I wish I had a larger supply. DD sometimes can take 2 hours to finish 1 bottle... so formula gets tricky with her.

The 1 hour rule applies to BM or formula that the baby has already touched. If the baby drinks from a bottle, their saliva causes bacteria to get into it. You can store unused BM and formula in your fridge for way longer.

Honestly? I don't buy it. Any of it. I asked my Dr. and she said I could give him leftover formula up to 3 hours later, so long as the temperature of the room isn't above 80 degrees. I hardly ever dumped unused formula and DS was always fine.

I have another stupid question...why doesn't this happen when the baby feeds from my breast?? Her saliva gets on my nipple, and I don't wash my boob after every feeding???

Re: Can someone explain to me why formula "goes bad" after an hour
I think its a rule for the formula companies to cover their a$$es incase a baby gets sick drinking "old" formula with potential for bacterial contamination. I have given formula a little over the 1 hour mark. Just use common sense... if its warmed I would toss. If you give it cold/cool it should last a little longer.

Yes. And they dont have the proper bacteria in their guts to destory bacteria. Their immune systems are much more frail than an adult.
I "buy" it. I don't believe it's a ploy to spend more $$. I think it's a common sense aspect of food spoilage and a baby's frail immune system. Too young to take a chance, even if the chance is small. That's what I believe is the point. When in doubt, throw it out.

I completely agree. Totally not worth it to take the chance.

Or why it is only good in the fridge for 24 hours (the powdered kind) but RTF is 48 hours???

Re: Can someone explain to me why formula "goes bad" after an hour
Bacteria spreads more quickly at room temperature or warmer. It will not form as quickly in a fridge which is why it will last longer in there.
Does the formula magically go bad after one hour of sitting out? Maybe not. But who wants to risk that? Are the formula makers covering their azzes? Of course they are. But again, who wants to risk giving their infant something which could make them sick?

Not a stupid question and one reason why BM is so good. :) Breastmilk has many antibacterial and healing properties to keep it from spoiling up to 8 hours at room temperature.
I don't buy that formula can go bad after an hour in room temp. I frequently leave my baby's bottle out longer and also put leftover in the fridge for use later. No sense in wasting it and my baby, now toddler, is perfectly fine.

Ditto. I never followed that rule. And I NEVER had an issue. I also would smell it. Even though formula stinks, it stinks WORSE when it's gone bad.

yeah smell test utilized here as well! I mean I dont give it to DS if its been like 5 hours or in the heat or whatnot, but if its been a little over an hour, I dont throw it out. or I will refrigerate and use again later. I cant bear to throw away a 5 oz bottle that he has taken 1 oz of. I think every formula feeding mom has this question at some point or another because it seems like such a waste!

Agreed. Kinda like the label on coffee containers that reads Caution! Beverage is hot.
I dont understand why RTF only lasts 48 hours either. If it's milk based and milk lasts longer than that, what goes bad in 48 hours ????

Re: Can someone explain to me why formula "goes bad" after an hour
I also look at it like... if milk was out for 2 hours I wouldn't drink it. We have never had an issue using a bottle w/i 2 hours after it is made. Rarely do we have a good amount of formula leftover an hour after he's eaten it. I have gone up to 2 hours w/no issues. But I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Re: Can someone explain to me why formula "goes bad" after an hour
My rule was always 2 hours. I have never had an issue using this rule!
But I know I have given formula that is older than even my 2 hour rule with no side effects.
