Can someone please explain the difference between OPKs and the CBEFM?
Other than price?
Is the CBEFM really worth that much $$$?

hi.  opk's detect your LH hormone which tells you when you are about to ovulate and the cbefm detects your estrogen level rising and the LH surge so it is able to tell you not only when you are about to ovulate, but also the days before that when you are highly fertile. i've always used opk's and then this month switched to the cbefm and i will say that it definitely gives you peace of mind because you know all the days that you are fertile. also, the opk's you have to hold your urine for 4 hours but with the cbefm you use your FMU so for me this was way more convenient!

Since the CBEFM is so much more expensive, I feel like a lot of people start with OPK's and if those don't work (meaning they don't get PG after a number of cycles) they will invest in the CBEFM so they can tune in to that bigger window. Doesn't really answer your question, just my 2 cents!

exactly! plus, the monitor you have forever so if you want more than one kid, you can use it again when ttc for #2.
wanted to also mention that you still buy sticks for the monitor. so it's not just the initial $$, but then $ for the sticks. they are not that expensive though!

Thank you for the answers everyone. I'm getting fed up with regular OPKs and was wondering if the expensive ones were worth it. Haven't decided yet (I'm trying for my second but not having as much success as I did the first time around).

I've become a huge proponent of temping. It's much cheaper than the CBEFM (my basal thermometer was $8 at Rite-Aid) and you learn so much about your cycle.
