Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

My name is Tara and we live in Northport. I have a DD Ava, who is 7 and a DS Brody who is almost 3.

Ava has ADHD, sensory issues and severe anxiety.

She is in a typical classroom. She will be starting a social skills class at Variety in Syosset soon and I am looking for a Psychologist for her and a parent support group for myself.

My name is Andrea. I am from Bellmore, AJ has classic autism and he just turned 4. He attends a full day at BOCES CRC and receives SEIT, Parent Training and speech at home, and gets everything at school.

He was Dxed at 15 months old and has since grown and flourished. He is my brainiac. He lacks in socialization and communication. He is very verbal but cannot express himself.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

We live in NJ. DS is 2.5, he began receiving EI services at 16 months due to not having any words at all, and some sensory issues. Was denied speech as he was deemed too young Chat Icon but was given OT and DI (nj's version of special instruction). At 2 yrs old was officially given speech as he had zero words stilll. No official diagnosis but we are seeing a developemental pediatrician next month. His therapists don't seem to think he's on the spectrum as he is otherwise engaging, shares experiences, recognizes social cues, pride in his work, plays with kids, etc. but we're not so sure.

Our biggest issue is he's still nonverbal other than about 4 words, only one of which he uses unprompted. And his sensory issues are still very present. Getting very nervous and scared for him as he's approaching 3 and the school system.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

My name is Suzanne and we live in Port Jeff. I have a 5-year old DS and 3-year old twins. Twin DS, Aidan, is PDD-NOS at age 3. He received ABA services 2x per day, 5 days per week for a year.

He just started DDI in Huntington this summer in the 6:1:3 Autism Class. He has made leaps and bounds. He has a lot of words, but does not initiate much. He is so much better with eye-contact and socializing with his siblings/cousins. He will be spending a good deal of time in the Integrated 12:1:2 class this school year at DDI according to his teacher.

My name is Dawn.
I have a DS, Bryan, who is 4.5 and diagnosed with PDD-NOS.
He was been attending a developmental school in Commack since he's 27 months.
He has come such a LONG way, it's amazing!
He receives: PT, OT, Speech, and ABA (3 days a week and the other 2, he's at a "typical" pre-k with a SEIT).

My DD is a little over 2. She was born at 33 weeks after me being on hospital bed rest for about a month. She was born with Down Syndrome.
She recieves all EI services in the home. Goes to group PT once a week and group swim once a week as well.

I'm Alicia...my daughter is Aurelia Joy, 6 years old. She was diagnosed as PDD-NOS at age 3.5. She suffers from serious speech delays, low muscle tone and a pronounced fermoal anteversion , which prevents her from running/walking normally.
She attended a developmental preschool and received ABA, speech, OT, PT and feeding therapies. She was in a contained class and moved into integrated after a few months and given SEIT in lieu of ABA. She was placed in a self-contained kindergarten class with speech and PT. Now she has been mainstreamed into 1st grade with a 2:1 aide as well as speech and PT.

We live on the North Shore of Nassau County. My name is Cheryl and my son is 3.5 and was diagnosed with PDD-NOS this Spring.

He started attending an Integrated PreK with a 15-1-2 class ratio yesterday. So far, so good, or at least he didn't fight me about getting on the bus this morning!

He had a speech delay and trouble eating when he was younger, but improved a great deal in both areas after starting EI services. He now speaks quite well, but his interpersonal skills are immature and he has a hard time with transitions. He also seeks and avoids sensory input and has a fair amount of anxiety. But he's a smart cookie, and wheels and deals like a seasoned used car salesman!

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

We live on the Southshore in Nassau County. Our daughter is almost 3 and has a significant language delay. She has very few expressed words but understands everything. She does not have any formal diagnosis, but we have been told to be aware of apraxia and asperger's (which confuses me as I didn't think there was such a speech delay with that.) We started yesterday at BCW. Full day 10:1:2 with speech and OT pull outs. I work 3 (long) days, so up to now she has been home with me or with nanny, so this is a big adjustment. She is beautiful and wonderful and loving and I just want to be doing the best for her.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

My name is Catherine. My DD is 2 years old and has Angelman Syndrome. She receives PT, OT, Speech, Special Ed, a swim group, and just started DDI in Ronkonkoma 2x/week. She has been in EI since about 9 months old, as I knew something was wrong because she wasn't making any of her milestones (other than smiling early Chat Icon ). We got her diagnosis when she was 15 months old and her services have increased with every IFSP meeting, as she continues to fall further and further behind her peers. Chat Icon

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

Hi, my name is Cathy and my son Ryan is 2 1/2. He started getting speech, OT, and SP teacher from 18 months. At 24 months he was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and started ABA 2x a day everyday. He just started yesterday a 1/2 day program at LV. And still gets ABA at home.
He recently started saying some words. He is all sensory seeking. Runs constantly, kicks, spins, and basically don't sit still. He seems to lack social skills with other children mostly. And has some immature play.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

DS is 4 and is "at risk" for ADHD (they won't officially diagnose until 6)

His receptive language is far below his expressive, which is backwards, so they think it's a focus issue.

We are going to a developmental ped to explore other avenues before a neurologist.

He gets SP and OT and is in an integrated half day program.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

Hi, I'm Melissa. I have 6 boys, 2 are on the spectrum. My 7 year old has Autism and is low functioning/non-verbal. Life is very challenging for him because he stims constantly and it gets in the way of him learning. My 3 year old was dx. with PDD-NOS at 2, since then he started speaking and has come so far through EI. He just started YAP and they are so impressed with his language/skills. It's so strange having 2 kids on the spectrum and one is on the high end and one on the low.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

My name is Robyn and I live in Holbrook. My DS will be 3 this month as was diagnosed with PDD-NOS when he was 22 months. He has come so far with ABA 2x/time for the past year. He will be starting a typical pre-school this year with a SEIT for about 3 of the 4 hours he is there. He also gets speech at home, and in a group setting. He is so smart, and knows a lot of things, but has trouble communicating his wants and needs. He also doesn't initiate play with peers. He sometimes doesn't even want to play with them. He is great with adults and also with my 15 year old DD. I am hopeful that he will make as good progress this year as he has made this past school year.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

I'm Tina in Brooklyn, NY. My DS Joey was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 19 months. He gets speech 5 times a week for 30 mins. OT once a week for 30 mins. ABA 5 times a week in the home for 2 hours each day and 5 times a week at school (Thursday's Child) for 2 hours each day.

He doesn't speak at all. Makes very basic sounds. His eye contact is on his terms and sporadic at best. He gets fixated on certain toys and items. He is very clingy to myself and our immediate family. Does well in outdoor activities (zoos, the park, etc) indoor parties, etc. are usually not his thing. He isn't very social with other kids.

Hi My name is Alana. My DS is 27 months. He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Failure to Thrive and severe GERD at 1 month old. He receives PT, OT, ST, Feeding Therapy, Nutrition and just started school at Just Kids 3 X per week for 2 1/2 hours with an aide. He has been on a feeding tube since he was 1 month old and just started eating baby food about 1 month ago. He also just got a Kaye walker and loves having some independence. He has about 20 words and signs and understands everything! All of his delays are more motor related but sometimes he gets very frustrated with his lack of independence.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

I'm Laura and my son is Zachary, he just turned 3 in June. We live in MA on Cape Cod. He received his classic Autism diagnosis in early February of this year. We were getting OT, EI and ABA at home until he turned 3. He went to a summer program at school and is going back again tomorrow. He'll be going 5 mornings to the school's ABA program and 2 afternoons in their integrated preschool - with an aide. He's made tremendous progress this year. He still has many social, expressive and sensory issues but we're thrilled with his school and their plans for him.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

Hi,

I saw your post about DDI and wanted to know how you liked their school program. My DS is also 2 and started an early intervention class at another school. He receiving all of his therapies at home. I am not loving his school program and was trying to keep an open mind about other schools in the area.

My son walks with a walker and has a 1:1 aid for help and is the only non walker in his class. I am afraid that the aid is being more of a classroom aid because I get lots of reports of him being tired, laying on the floor and not participating. I was wondering if you were experiencing something similar or you were getting better results.

THanks for any input.

Re: Can we re-introduce ourselves and our children?

I'm Christine - DD#1 we were told after her evaluation that she is off the charts for ADHD (but b.c of her age they don't label her but tell us that she isn't even in the at risk category), she also has sensory issues and fine motor deficits. They also think she might have some auditory processing maybe going on. She goes to a regular preschool but gets OT and social skills.
