Can we talk High Heels?

Emily and I spent 4 hours today at the mall doing back-to-school clothes shopping.

She is almost 7 and there were more compromises then ever! She wants to wear everything glitzy and bedazzled, and I wanted some practical clothes in there also.

But the hardest part was shoe shopping. What is up with all of the big-girl shoes having heels? Of course she sees them and begs for them, and tells me that all of her friends wear them. She is a size 1.5 --- it isn't like she's wearing that big a shoe! I keep telling her that she can wear a heel when her age has a "teen" in it...and then I imagine all of the arguments we're going to have in the years until we get there!

Did anyone find a great pair of flats for their girls for this school year? And can you share pics and where you got them from?

My dd is 7 and the same way with the bling on everything. All she wanted were the sequined skirts, cardis and dresses from the Children's Place.

Anyhow, these are the shoes she has for this year, some still fit from last year, but I went a little overboard Chat Icon

Children in our elementary school are not allowed to wear heels to school. I agree that I wouldnt allow my daughter to even wear them to a party until shes 13, and even then were talking low! Theyre dangerous and its been proven that they can do some FUNKY things to your feet!

Thankfully no arguments from my DD, since she goes to a school where a uniform is required (and for gym too), and shoes must conform to the dress code too. She must wear a black oxford, penny loafer or mary-jane type shoe. No ballet flats, heeled shoes or Uggs. I got her these from Payless (last year she had a similar pair from the BASS outlet):

Gym sneakers must be basically black or white and athletic (i.e., no converse, twinkle toes, light up sneakers, neon laces, etc.). I got her a pair of C9 Champion sneakers.

I have 2 girls, 9 and 6.5

No heels, I just won't. I left Payless a couple of years ago with a tantruming child because of high heels. I even complained to the worker about why the **** they make heels for 6 yos?!?!

I did have heels when I was little, but they were the kind on a dressy shoe for Easter or something.

I take them shopping for a few things that they can pick on their own and do the rest on my own. With shoes I buy the same shoe in a couple of sizes (do this with a couple of styles too), bring them home where they can try them on and then return what they don't like.

Re: Can we talk High Heels?

We just did shoe shopping today & had the high heel argument repeatedly! My DD is 7 & I couldn't believe the selection of heels. She's on the big side for her age. Very tall & thus she's a 2.5-3 in shoes. She kept begging for a little heel & I told her they were not appropriate for 2nd grade. I finally talked her into a pair of black flats with a little bow that look like a pair I have so that excited her.

I mean I guess I can understand the fancy dress shoes with a small chunky heel- I think I had a pair as a kid, but some of the shoes I saw looked SO grown up! I don't see how they're at all age appropriate.

OMG, REALLY??????Chat Icon

Oh, no bleeping way!!! It's just ridiculous!

We need to stop with the sexy girl clothes... they are little girls!!... not mini-RHONJChat Icon Chat Icon

And, yeah, I know plenty of moms must be buying them (I'm talking to YOU Katie HolmesChat Icon Chat Icon ) or these companies would not be making them.

I'm becoming very, very pro-dress code/uniform.

No offense to anyone but IMO little girl shoes with heels are so TACKY and unnecessary. DD is 4 and has play heels but that's about it. They are princess and are worn inside the house for play dress up. I am pretty lenient with other girly stuff (painted nails, clear lipgloss, etc) but I draw the line at heels and hooker outfits.

ETA: Check out the catalog next. I think the website is www.nextdirect.com. They have really cute shoes and are pretty affordable.

Re: Can we talk High Heels?

Thank you everyone! I am glad I am not the only one who won't allow my DD to wear heels! She acts like every kid in her grade wears them! She totally knows how to play me at 6 years old! Chat Icon So glad I held my own on this!

We ended up with these shoes from Stride Rite! We are both happy with them so we've put off the whole heel issue for another 6 months or so!

My sentiments exactly! I LOVE Next! They have the cutest, mostly age appropriate stuff.

P.S. I was surprised to see what many of the K-3 students had on yesterday. I feel like I was one of the very few parents that dressed their girl like a little girl. I don't like the "mini adult" look on these kids.
