Can we talk stomach bugs? BTDT moms. UPDATE!

Update again:
See bottom of thread...

Update again:
Well it has started all over again. Just when I thought it was over - she hadn't thrown up for about 5-6 hours now.

Update:

Well thankfully she has stopped throwing up (about 2 hours ago) and is begging us for the pedelyte so she has gotten about 3 oz down (I don't want her to take too much but we give her an ounce and she is begging for more. She just passed out - but now she is having constant diarrhea - every 15 mins.

I spoke to the ped earlier who said to wait until she hadn't vomited in 45-1 hr before trying a few sips - and she should be fine.

She still doesn't have a fever - does anyone know how long this lasts? We don't know anyone who has this so I'm not sure what to expect.

____________________________

Okay DD has never thrown up before (other than her spit up from reflux as a baby). So I have no idea what to do with her. We were going to build a bear this morning b.c DH took this week off to spend with us. Well we got about 1 mile from the house and DD who was fine all morning - starts to violently throw up about 4 -5 times in a span of 3 mins trying to drive her home. Needless to say it is all over the car seat etc but that is another post for another time...

So the ped just said over the phone to watch her (she had no fever - 99.1 at the time) and to wait 1-2 hours and if she doesn't throw up again to give her some gataraide - well of course I no sooner hand her the drink (which she didn't even try) than you guessed it she threw up all over me.

So I waited about 30 mins and I have tried to give it to her again I don't want her to get dehydrated but I don't want to make her sick. But of course she hates it.

What protocol did you all follow? what do you do - offer them etc?

DD had something similar recently. Our ped. told us not to worry so much about her food intake but to definitely give her pedialyte. She still had a slight appetite so we gave her a little banana, yogurt and pastina with a little butter.

I hope she feels better soon! Chat Icon

Aww thank you - but unfortunately she is just laying around on her tummy and refuses to drink anything including water - but I want her to have something with electrolytes.

DD just had this she's almost a year old. This was a first for us too. We gave her pedilyte, bananas and rice cereal. TMI but the next day the problem was at the other end but by the end of day 2 she was fine.

No fever. No change in disposition. I think it just had to run it's course. HTH

Re: Can we talk stomach bugs? BTDT moms.

my DD just got over a stomach bug.. she couldnt hold anything down all day but by the end of the night I was able to get a teaspoon of pedialyte every 15 minutes. before she went to bed she had about 2 ounces total which at that point I was happy with. my ped said that if she wasnt able to hold down the teaspoon every 15 minutes then I should bring her to the ER for the IV's. i'm so glad I didnt have to do that.

DD had a really bad stomach bug when she was 1 that landed her in the hospital for over 6 daysChat Icon

Anyway what I learned from that experience. HYDRATION is your #1 priority - food not important. You must get fluids in her. You don't need a lot just a few oz's every hour or so. If she get's a fever she'll need more fluids because they can dehydrate very quickly with a fever.

Water is NOT the fluid of choice. It has nothing in it. Gatorade, pedialyte, flat cola, juice, ice pops, ice chips, you get the pointChat Icon anything!! My ped recommended letting the stomach rest at least a 1/2 hour to an hour after vomitting (no fluids/foods), then try again. If she refuses to drink use a medicine dropper. You have to keep her hydrated and let it run it's course.

As the others said if she gets an appetite give her banana's, toast, rice, soup, etc.

I hope she feels betterChat Icon

thank you - she is now throwing up every 30-40 mins - but she has taken 2 sips of gatorade but she just throws it up a few mins later. I haven't taken it in a while but I don't think she has a fever yet she is still cool to the touch. She just fell asleep so I'm going to let her rest and try again when she wakes. I will try the medicine dropper when she wakes if she won't sip from the straw or sippy.

Re: Can we talk stomach bugs? BTDT moms.

My doc told us to wait two hours after violent vomiting to let her stomach settle before trying ANY liquids. I thought this was strange but it worked. I would wait a hour or so and try a teaspoon of liquid at a time.

We had this horrible virus and I am so terrified of her getting it again. You are in my thoughts today!Chat Icon

Thank you everyone so much!!! The sad part is that DD wasn't sick for her whole first year and we went out all the time - she had 2 episodes of spasmodic croup over the summer from allergies but the first time she was every sick was in Nov - now since then she has had roseola, coxsackie and now the stomach bug - poor thing - it is just so sad to see her laying there on her tummy holding her stomach.

First Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to you!

When DS was sick about a month ago he coughed so hard he threw up EVERYWHERE and multiple times in a row. I wasn't sure if it was from coughing (which it turns out it was) or from the virus so i called the ped and this is what he said to do - if it is right before bed - don't give them anything, just let them go to sleep with nothing else. It is good to give their bellies a rest. After that or otherwise - the ped said to give only pedialyte or water if he wouldn't drink the pedialite and only .5 oz every 15 min to see if he tolerates it. He said to only move onto milk or solid food if he tolerates the pedialyte and not for a few hours after that. He never mentioned gatorade. Hope this helps and hope she feels better soonChat Icon

Thank goodness the worst part (I think) is over! This sounds like what we had...I posted about it recently. Only difference was that DD vomited less and had diarrhea more. Chat Icon Hopefully it will just be a 24 hour bug.

I hope she continues to get down the Pedialyte and starts to feel better very soon!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Well when she was awake she gulped down the pedialyte - and was begging for more - but I'm afraid to give her too much at one time until I'm sure she can keep it down. So I'm trying to do say 1 ounce every 30 mins and if she doesn't vomit again in 2 hours I will let her have more. The funny part is she HATES pedialyte but was loving the apple flavor DH found at the store.

The one my dd had did stop for a day, then started all over. You just have to sit it out and really watch her fluid intake and fever. SorryChat Icon

DD had this stomach bug a while ago...she threw up a few times and only for one day....but the diarrhea lasted 10 days. so even though the vomiting stops, diarrhea can last a while.

Well still no fever but the poor thing is still throwing up - I thought it was slowing down - since she made it about 5-6 hours, then 4, then 2 - ugh she wakes up throwing up, then cries for a while then passes out again but the diarrhea has stopped. I feel so bad for her.

Thank you - she was up and down vomiting all night - now the diarrhea is back again.

She hasn't had any wet diapers but she does have tears - I know the ped said to watch for tears, drool or diapers. Should I be worried that she isn't urinating? She still has no fever and is drinking some pedialyte.
