Can wood panel walls be painted?

I have a finished basement with some wood paneling...I think it's fake wood - not sure what it is.

Can it be painted? Easily?

I've painted over cheap paneling twice. First time I primed then painted second time just bought a better paint, both times came out great and looked so much better than the blah fake wood.

we had wood paneling in our old house and we painted over it. It wasn't hard at all but definitely took a couple of coats because of them seams. It looked so much better than the wood paneling though, and really helped the room look updated

My dad painted over his wood panelling at least 15 years ago and it still looks great

I've painted over wood paneling also. Depending in the style, grain, spacing, etc it can actually turn out to look like bead board.
My DHs friend is a painter and he swears by the primer Kilz when painting stuff like that.

We painted real wood paneling (wide plank, tongue and groove) in our last house and I loved the look. We had to use an oil based primer though.This house, we had real wood paneling in our basement and did it again. We painted it a creamy beige and love it.

Yes, my parent's house had wood paneling. It was lightly sanded to make the paint stick better.

It looks nice because the wall looks textured with the seems.
