Can you go to the dentist and get a cavity filled when you are preggers?

I know this might seem like a silly question but..........

I am having terrible tooth pain and I can see the cavity on the side if my tooth. I'm scared to wait but don't know if oral work is ok due to infection.

I think its ok, but they can't give you any novicaine (sp??). Check with your Dr. to be sure

They can't give Novocaine but they can give you something else to numb the area I just don't remember what it's called.

Call your OB first make sure they are ok with it and then give your dentist a call.

Yep, they sure can and i had it done a week and a half ago...AND had a root canal last week. They just can't give you novocaine because the epinepherin in it makes your heart race and the baby's heart as well. They use a safe anesthetic, and I honestly didn't feel a thing. However, make sure to tell them you are PG and find out befoer you go if they require a note from your OB. My dentist and endodontist both asked for an "okay" note from my OB so I got one and presented it to both. You will be fine.

You can have novocain...just the regular strength though. I know that have some that are stronger than others.

I haven't had this done but it was written on something I got from the doctors office.

Thank you everyone - I was so nervous but in so much pain.... It would be worth it to go in with no drugs at this point.

Good idea to ask if I need a note from OB yet - I wouldn't have thought of it.

I had two small fillings done, my OB was okay with it, just check with yours. I would ask your dentist what material he/she uses for the filling also. Mine used a white filling, which doesn't contain anything harmful to DC. The silver fillings aren't as safe though.

I didn't need novacaine, they just numbed the area. If it's not a big filling, you probably won't need it. I swear the cleaning was much more painful than the filling!

You can have novicane, just not the kind with epinephrine. I just cracked a tooth and my ob and my dentist both told me that.

Yes, you can get a cavity filled, I had tons of dental work while pregnant both times. I just asked the dentist to use the novocaine without epinephrine.

i had to get a tooth filled and i did it without novacaine it wasnt that bad.

Go get it done!!! Just let them know you are pregnant (sometimes it's not so obvious and they don't want to ask). Like the other girls said, they give you a numbing agent without epi. I had 3 emergency root canals done during my pregnancy and my baby is fine!!!
