Anything by Steven King. I really enjoyed 'Salem's Lot, Carrie, The Stand, and The Dome (the last 2 aren't traditional scary books but are still excellent).

Define "scary". Everyone's idea of scary is different. Bloody/gory (Friday the 13th). Psychologically scary (Silence of the Lambs, IT), creepy, supernatural, things that could possibly happen in real life, etc.

Then most Stephen King books will work for you. I've read just about all of his books (he's got a few new ones that I own, just haven't gotten to read yet). IT is very scary. Cujo is about being trapped in a car "guarded" by a rabid dog. The Cell is about what could happen if all cell phones were emitting a mind-altering signal. The Long Walk has a very creepy premise. Kids walk until they die.... literally.... the winner gets untold riches. Christine is a classic. A car with a life of it's own. Misery is great, and quasi-autobiographical. Gerald's game is another psychological horror story. Woman chained to her bed in Maine (of course... ), with nobody to hear her, and she has to escape.

Re: Can you recommend a really good scary book?
I absolutely LOVE scary books! One of the creepiest books I ever read was John Saul's Suffer the Children. But all of his are truly scary.
Any Stephen King book will creep you out a little or at least get you thinking ALOT!
I also read Dean Koontz, the last one I read had my pulse going. It is called 77 Shadow Street. That one had a sci-fi thriller theme going on.

JA Konrath's series with Jack Daniels. She's a homicide detective who chases serial killers. Pretty gory, but I love them!

Re: Can you recommend a really good scary book?
i'm a huge Stephen King fan and have read pretty much all of his books/short stories Agreed, no one comes close to giving you the chills than he does!
Also try Clive Barker - his stuff is a bit more gorier and more fantastical than Stephen King (ever see the movie Hell Raiser? the book was waaaaay worse and more in depth, scared the shit out of me)
And one book that really got to me was called The Descent by Jeff Long. I think they made a movie loosely based on the book, but it was really crappy and nothing really like the book at all. The book is long and detailed, but really good
