Re: Can you touch-type?

Yeah, I think it runs in the family. My mom is a medical transcriptionist so she's a speed typer. PLUS growing up my dad didn't get us video games, we had computer games.

In HS and college I also took computer classes with typing and using Microsoft. I type all day long for work so I'm pretty quick. Sometimes I amaze myself and I know the people in my office comment on my typing all the time.

Re: Can you touch-type?

yes I can talk and type at the same time too LOL Chat Icon

I used to have my keyboard 'tray' under my desk so I could just type away and folks were surprised later to know i was doing one thing while talking to them about another.

My current keyboard at work must have been the cheapest thing EVER. I have had it for less than a year and yet I'm missing 13 of letters off the keyboard. its literally just rubbed totally off. I don't care since I don't need them but if someone is using my desk while I'm out they have to bring another keyboard over since the letters are missing on mine.

Right now I'm totally missing the following letters:
A,S,E,D,C,R,F,H,V,N,M,O,L,T Chat Icon

my home keyboard is a Kinesis which allows for rapid typing without moving your wrists. Its also 'sunken' so you are forced to use the home row type skill. Its actually helped me to type faster. My hubby wanted it, I thought it looked funny and strange but now I love it! hahaha

ETA: the only letters I have not beat up or about to become invisable are:
Q,W,Z,X,U,J Hrm.. wonder what that says about my typing.....

I dont think I ever look at the keyboard when I type. I usually look at the screen, but not always. Nobody ever taught me..I dont know when I started doing it.

Re: Can you touch-type?

Learned in junior high (1978 !) on a manual typewriter. In college typed out my papers because word processors were not a household item.

I can still hear the drills :
fff [space] jjj [space] ddd [space] kkk [space] all the way thru the alphabet.

I don't type as fast as I used to. Arthritis is slowing me down.

Re: Can you touch-type?

Yes, we took classes in middle school and I have been able to type without looking at the keyboard since then. I can do about 80-90 wpm. People are always freaked out by how fast I type and how I can type and speak to them at the same time.

Re: Can you touch-type?

Yes; Katie Gibbs girl here; used to type 85-90 wpm; I'm sure it's quicker now.

It freaks DH out when I talk to him & continue typing or if he's in the other room & he's like, are you actually typing like that (hearing the sound) Chat Icon

Yup learned in HS and haven't had to look down at the keyboard since then.

Same here. Dropped physics my senior year and took keyboarding instead Chat Icon Now, you tell ME which one of those is more useful Chat Icon

Well considering that there would be no keyboard or fingers to type with without physics I would say physics is the more important subject Chat Icon

But then I would say keyboarding was def up there in the most important classes in high school. It makes doing physics so much easier Chat Icon

Re: Can you touch-type?

i can for the most part type without looking. I have no clue how many words per minute though. What I AM great at is typing numbers without ever looking at them ever. When I worked at a bank I was the fastest teller ever. I typed account numbers and amounts and everything so fast that people used to just stop and watch me. I even do it now cashiering at Costco... I type full barcodes in like 3 seconds Chat Icon

Yes self taught since college, it's a skill you gotta know in the computer field. :)

Actually, no...Chat Icon I know quite a few people in the IT field that can't touch-type. They hunt and peck, or do one or two fingers on each hand.... for 8 hours a day! Chat Icon

This drives DH crazy. He feels just the time people waste hunting and pecking for one line, he could type 5 lines of code.

Re: Can you touch-type?

I don't keep my fingers on the right keys, but yes. I'm VERY fast. I'm a receptionist, so when people pass by my desk and I'm in the zone (usually when I'm posting on LIF! Chat Icon) they often comment about how fast I am. DH once even asked me if I was just running my fingers over the keys and not actually typing. Chat Icon

ETA: But I'm super loud! lol! I pound those keys.
