Can your 3 year old dress themself?

I had Noah's 3 year checkup (by phone???? Strange I know) and the woman asked if he could dress himself, I said, no, I didn't think so....so she said, well at 3 years old he should be able to dress himself! I never even tried to let the kid dress himself.

So for the last two days I have been giving him his clothes, and he has been putting them on himself. Not great, mind you, he needs a little help, but the kid can get the clothes over his head, he needs help with fiddly bits...

So, can your kid dress themself?

eta to say, from this phone evaluation, I am going to be referred to speech therapy again, hopefully this time they can give us some real help. Noah talks lots about lots of different things, but we don't always understand him, he still is having trouble with lots of sounds. So heres hoping they will get us the help we need.

for the most part, yes. Has some trouble getting her arms into sleeves

Yes, she does it. Sometimes she still puts things on backwards though.

Jordana does- but she puts her clothes on backwards a lot.

For the most part but she still needs help with buttons and sometimes puts a shirt on backwards.

Mu DD just turned 3 and to be honest up until about 3 weeks ago I was still dressing her as it was easier!! but one day she said "mommy i dress myself" so I said - "fire ahead" and she did!! her long socks frustrate her and she does put her tops on backwards sometimes but for the most part she has it down.

Now undressing herself is a diffrent story - she has been doing that since she was about a year old - nudist in the making for sure.

Yes and she gets the concept that the tag goes in the back too.

Every now and then she'll be playing by herself in her room and will come out in a hilarious, inside out, totally mismatched outfit that she put on herself... so yes

She can do her underwear, pants, socks and shoes. Shirts? I don't know...I usually end up putting them on. Like others said, if I weren't there I'm sure most of the clothing would be on backward!

Aly isnt 3 yet - she will be 3 in June. But she cant really dress herself yet. she can almost put her pants on by herself, thats about it. she can take her clothes off though easily LOL

My sister is 3 and can dress herself with the occasional backwards shirt or sweatpants

Kaitee has been dressing herself since 1 years old.

She didn't always pick clothes that matched, or that even fit, she also put them on backwards sometimes. But since she turned 2 she is good about making sure they are on the right way.

Here she was at 17 months old (she went to bed in just a diaper and woke up from her nap dressed like this):


When she was 18 months old she wanted to go out back with DH, he told her if she put clothes on he would take her outside. She ran away and came back out of her room dressed like this (she even put the shoes on):




Sh was ealry with the undressing too. She would wake up naked (no diaper even) at 11 months old. She puts clothes on and takes clothes off at least 5 times a day and has since around 12 months old.

Brooke is 15 month old and she puts shirts on her neck but can't figure out how to get her arms in. she also puts her legs in but can't pull pants up yet.

We always have clothes laying around the house since Kaitee can open her locked dresser. I think giving them clothes to play with while they are in a diaper/underwear really helps them practice and learn!

Cailen can pretty much dress himself now at 22 months. But, he is a very anal, particular type of kid who insists on doing a lot by himself, so this may be more a neurosis issue than a "wow my kid is so great" issue!

Kayleigh can put her pants & socks & shoes on, but sometimes needs help with buttons. As for tops, it depends on the type. If they are really loose fitting she has no problem getting them on herself, but with certain shirts she gets stuck with the sleeves.

By three my son could dress himself head to toe, no shoe ties obviously.

Yes, she was able to dress herself pretty early on.

Yes but the combinations where horrendous and we always had to check that they changed their underwear.

If it makes you feel better, I still dress my 7 year old while he's sleeping if I'm in a rush.
