Can't believe I'm even considering anything other than Jeep, but looking for a small/mid size SUV... what do you recommend?
After being a Jeep owner since 2002 ('02 Liberty, then '06 Grand Cherokee and presently '08 Liberty), I'm considering getting away from Jeep and into a different SUV soon.
Can you recommend your small/mid SUV? If you don't mind, what is your payment? Lease or buy? Money down? Car seat in middle or on side? How does it fit rear facing?
I got a great deal on my Liberty (we bought it, but are considering leasing the new car) and hoping to keep the payments low on a new car.
Anyone have the Mazda CX-7? DH has the mazda 3 hatchback and I love it so we're considering another mazda. What about the new Hyundai Tucson, I like the style of that one.
We haven't test drove any cars yet, we might this weekend... so I'm open to anything!
THANKS!

We have a Mazda CX-7. So far I have zero complaints, love the way it drives. We've had it since DS was born so we had the infant seat rear facing behind the passenger seat, and now he's in a Britax, a Marathon I think I can check in a little, and it's still behind the passenger side and he and the passenger always have plenty of room. It fits his City Mini in the trunk with plenty of room for any and all other crap. And come January we'll have to also have another infant seat in there as well, I don't think there will be an issue at all.

We ended up with the Mazda CX 9 but tested both b/c we were considering one of each. WE LOVE the 9! and I'm sure would have loved the 7 as well (we went with a car instead of 2 SUV's). The 9 is great, I love how it drives and really get more of a car feel than truck like SUV.

You know what, it's funny b/c I was going to write about how my sister just got a Subaru Forester a few months ago and hates it. I don't remember the few things she rattled off to me about why she hates it but she's so bummed that she's stuck in the lease for 3 years. I was shocked b/c I always heard great things about Subaru!

We have a 2009 Mazda CX7 and love it! We leased it, $2k down our montly payment is $299. The car seat is in the middle and it fits 1 person on each side perfectly.

I have an 07 Ford Escape. I LOVE my lil truck. It's the perfect size for us (right now anyway)
DD is rear facing on the passenger side. we don't have any payments as we bought it used, outright last year.
It's incredibly easy to handle and I have yet to have any issues with it

I'm getting my new subaru on Monday!!! :) I got the outback.
I had the CX-7 and for *ME* I hated it. I hated the trunk, I hate that it was to tall for me (i'm short and it killed me putting him in and out).

We just ordered the Subaru Outback. It's ranked the best in it's class. Big back seat for 2 car seats, handles really well, bigger than the past Outbacks, safety, all wheel drive.....

Re: Can't believe I'm even considering anything other than Jeep, but looking for a small/mid size SUV... what do you recommend?
I have a 2005 Nissan Murano we purchased in 2006. I love it so far. The back seat is roomy, its decent on gas and drives well. We've squeezed 100 things in the trunk and survived including a road trip to PA with DD, my sister, my dog, a huge stroller and luggage and we were still comfortable.
Previously we owned one 2000 and the other 2003. I loved the 2003 Explorer...everyone I know who has one loves theirs. I think payment on the 2000 was around $450 a month with $500 down and the 2003 was $500 a month with $500 down.

My SIL has a Honda CRV and loves it. She has 2 kids (5 and 2) and has been using it since they were born. She recently got a newer model. They live a couple hours away and they're always traveling back and forth to ILs and she loves that it's roomy enough for all 4 of them (plus the 80 lb dog they used to have).

Honda CR-V! Great car...I miss my Fit but it just wasn't cutting it anymore. You can't go wrong with Hondas! Very reliable cars!
Car seat in middle...I paid about 21k for it (if I remember correctly), and my monthly payments are about $326.

I have a Hyundai Santa Fe and love it. THis is actually my 2nd Santa Fe. It's an '08 and we bought it right before we had DS. It is roomy and has great trunk space. DS is 19 months and rear facing in his Graco 65 and he has plenty of room. The carseat still leaves room for someone on either side (he is in the middle) and I have no trouble seeing over the carseat when driving. Payment is $340 a month and that was with trading in my older Santa Fe. They are really reasonable and a great car. We havent had any problems.

Re: Can't believe I'm even considering anything other than Jeep, but looking for a small/mid size SUV... what do you recommend?
We just bought a '10 Hyundai SantaFe. Very happy so far. We were very undecided between the Rav and the CR-V. I test drove the Nissan Rogue and did not like the pickup in the vehicle. I hated the way the Rav tailgate opened (to the side) however it had more room in the trunk area than the CR-V and I liked the options better and the price and would have ultimately went with it had I not received a great deal on the Hyundai. It was $32K sticker price, fully loaded, V-6, we put 10K down and financed for 5 years. Our payment is $310/mo. We have the car seat rear facing behind the driver seat and have plenty of room even when DH drives. We are currently doing IVF again so there is a possibility of twins and we wanted something that would acommodate three rear facing car seats (which it will).

I have a Toyota Rav4 Limited V6 and I LOOOOVVVVVEEEE it!! It's sooooo nice, so fast, so roomy, so comfortable. We've had it since Feb. 2007 and we haven't had a single problem with it.
It was $31K, we put down $10K, and our payments are $454.25/month. We have a 5 year loan.

Re: Can't believe I'm even considering anything other than Jeep, but looking for a small/mid size SUV... what do you recommend?
I had the Mazda CX-7 and for me, the day the lease was over was a VERY happy day. I never felt like there was enough room. No one over 5'7 could sit comfortably in the back. The truck space was small. And it was TERRIBLE on gas plus it took 93 octane.
DH just got the Equinox and he loves it. It is more roomy than the CX-7 too.

Thanks! I think we're going to go to Hyundai, Mazda and Subaru this weekend.
I asked my sister what she didn't like about the Forester and she said that she was just used to a car before (she had the legacy) and this handles differently. Since I'm used to a jeep she said I probably wouldn't mind it. So we're going to check it out since they are having a special.

I just got the same and to say I love it is an understatement!
First the room! DS is a big kid and was outgrowing our Jetta (he could kick the driver from his car seat) He has so much room in this car. I have had 3 seats in this car (a Graco Nautlis in the middle, Alpha Omega behind passanger and a booster behind passenger) and it fit fine. I have also had the 2 car seats (one on either side) and have sat in the middle (tight yes but DS got sick on a car ride!)
I love the features, I love the ride, I love the look, etc. I stopped numerous people in parking lots when I was looking to ask if they liked their car and not one person with a Santa Fe had a bad thing to say. The only "bad" thing I can say is that it doesnt have some of the luxury features of other cars (power liftgate, rear entertainment etc) but those werent important to me.
The one feature I am most in love with and parents with kids on nebulizers will understand. My car has a regular outlet in the trunk, probably designed for Dvd players or computers, but when on a recent trip DS got sick and needed treatments every 2 hours it was a GODSEND!
We pay under $400 fully loaded except no navigation (heated leather seats, sunroof, v-6 AWD) and we added a full 10 year warranty so we have bumper to bumper for 10 years and roadside assistance for t5.
Honestly I would stay away from the CRV at this point. A friend got it 2 years ago when her DS was born, and its tight. We went on vacation with them and I couldnt beleive how little trunk space there was. THey are now thinking of TTC #2 and are getting a new car!
PS, We looked at the Grand Cherokee, Nissan Murano, Mazda CX-7 & 9 (loved 9 just to much car for me - I drove an old Jetta before), Chevy Equinox, and the Ford Edge. For me the Santa Fe was a slam dunk hte minute I drove it!
