Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information... UPDATE on page 2- came back from dealer...

I just found out from the Nissan dealership that we need to get $1900 worth of work done to pass inspection... I knew there were problems because the check engine light has been on for a while and I had trouble with the car not accelerating at times... but this much Chat Icon

We have to pick up the car tonight with no inspection sticker because we can not afford the work. We are going to get a print out of everything that needs to be done and the cost.

Can you ladies please let me know if we can possibly get the work done for cheaper at a mechanic? Is it more expensive at a dealership? Does anyone know anything about cars and work?

This is what he said we needed:

- New tires (this /I knew for a while - we needed new tires for well over a year, but never had the money for them - now we definitely need to get them...)

- alignment work for the tires

- Belts

- Transmission work

- Front end work

- Bulbs replaced

Does that sound like $1900 worth of work? Does anyone know if there is a way it can all be done for cheaper?

Its a 2001 Nissan Maxima...

I don't know what we are going to do - we need to get the car work, but we also need money to live and we have a newborn baby...

I don't know where your'e located, but I have a mechanic in Lynbrook who just finished working on my car. He's very trustworthy and has always done reliable work at a reasonable price. Let me know if you're interested.

Chat Icon you can DEFINITELY get repairs done for less by a mechanic. the trick is to find someone HONEST! and that isn't easy. you should ask your friends and family to recommend their mechanic. dealers charge WAY more for repairs! that much I can tell you!

Yes, a dealership will charge much more...especially that it is a foreign car

Not sure if you'd want to do this but we did this w/ our old car when it HAD to pass inspection--- go to a tire place that sells used tires... and buy 4 of the same kind- and have them put them on... you can replace the bulbs yourself usually... just read your manual.

That should cut down on some of the cost.

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information...

What kind of transmission problems are you having? DH had a Maxima and it's the transmission that's jacking the cost up. But that depends on what is wrong with it. Did he give you the diagnostic report for the transmission? Your car has a chip in it and they should give you the print out.

You might come out a little less with a private mechanic instead of the dealer.

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information...

I am in Northport - we went to the Habberstad Nissan in Huntington...

We are picking up the car tonight and we'll get the print out and everything then.

I do have a mechanic that I go to in Huntington, and then someone referred me to a guy near me in Northport a while back - maybe if I call them both, they may be able to tell me their prices? Would mechanics do that?

I want to cry... Chat Icon

Yes, they'll give you a ballpark figure. For the transmission work, check out Aamco, they do transmission work, DH had one done by them.

They will definitely give you an estimate. And I would also do what another poster mention. Do the tires with a tire company and change the bulbs yourself. That will save you some $$

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information...

LIza, ANY mechanic w/b less than the dealer (DH had a fit when I had an oil change by the dealer when they did our recalls last week---60!!!! w/ parts)

DH changes the bulbs in my car & he rotates the tires & does minor stuff on the car...changing the bulbs is a 5 min. job.

You can buy tires at Sears or a discounter and have them install them.

Not sure how much the other work will run, but definitely ask for recommendations (you need someone honest)

I think my own mechanic will be honest - DH hasnt been happy with them because he feels they havent been proactive enough with work we needed in the past, but I think they would be honest about work needed now....

Well, you can go to a small gas station-type inspection place & tell them that you need an inspection but you know that the car won't pass & see if they can do anything for you. I know with my old car, I just told them I needed the sticker & I paid a little more for it. Kind of illegal but, hey.

The alignment should be less than $100 (I don't think any parts are involved), belts you can buy yourself, tires you can get cheap for now. I can't remeber what else---was there anything major?

Both of those sound major but might not be. Front ent could just be the tire alignment or shocks & struts. Transmission work could mean anything from replacing a filter to getting a new transmission. But you would definitely know if your transmission was that bad.

I would suggest going to someone you trust, give them the list from the dealership (without the prices of course) & ask them what is really necessary to pass inspection & what can wait.

When i need work done, I usually look up the parts & order them myself.

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information...

Anything to do with the transmission or engine will cost a bit of money...but all that does not sound like $1900!!! def bring that car somewhere else...and a few of the minor things your DH can prob do on his own for cheaper

eta: if you buy tires at somewhere like Costco..one they will be cheaper and two they will align them for you

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information...

does the $1900 include the cost of the new tires?? Definitely seems high!

ETA: Also if you are getting new tires, won't most places realign them anyway?

Get tires at ALL WEATHER TIRES in Huntington Station on Depot Rd (they usually have a coupon in the Northport coupon book you get in the mail).

And I can replace my headlight bulbs, so I imagine your DH will easily be able to!

Sorry this is happening Liza
Definitely go to a mechanic, the dealership will rip you off!!!

You need transmission work already and it's a 2001? Is any of it covered under a warranty?

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information...

I recently had the same trouble with Nissan but not for as much money. I did complain about the prices though claiming I could get it done cheaper somewhere else and they dropped $85 off $495 really quick.

Normally in a pinch I would rec. this but not with a newborn! Having a teeny baby is stressful enough w/o having to worry if a tire is gonna pop! Get the tires done at a goodyear or other discount tire place, Have DH change the bulbs, they cost $2 but will charge you a half hour at $75/hr to change them at a dealership! Do the little things you can and then bring it to your local mechanic. There is a mech on the corner of 25a and randou, the corner opposite of 7-11. They are pretty honest. GL!
