Try Frank's Car Care in Greenlawn. My family has taken our cars there for years. Good luck!

Get tires at ALL WEATHER TIRES in Huntington Station on Depot Rd (they usually have a coupon in the Northport coupon book you get in the mail).
And I can replace my headlight bulbs, so I imagine your DH will easily be able to!
I second All Weather Tires. I got new tires for my Pathfinder there a couple of months ago. DH priced Costco and BJs and they were cheaper at All Weather Tires. They can change the tires while you wait, and I believe they balance and align them then too. We've gone there more than once and have been happy with their prices.
Light bulbs you should be able to change yourself. The belt could get tricky.
As for the transmission, sounds like it was going with the accelerating problems you were having. I would go elsewhere for a second opinion. Nissan will charge you for Nissan parts, which are always more IMO.

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information...
The majority of the expense is going to be the transmission and front end work-tires can be expensive too. I don't know if you belong to Costco but you can get really good tires there for cheap. Definitely check out mechanics other than the dealership-the dealership will always be a lot more expensive.

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information... UPDATE on page 2- came back from dealer...
OK - just came back -
they were a little snooty when I asked if I can write the prices down to go over w/ my husband and look around and price things - he did say, well they are Nissan parts, and they will be more expensive, but its worth it and why get cheaper parts, etc - I'll just be coming back to them again... He also said they would have worked with me, given me a discount, loaner car, etc- but why didn't they tell me all that a lot earlier when I was on the phone with them telling them they will have to hold off on the work for now?
When he kept saying how I shouldn't go for cheaper parts, its a bad idea, they won't be Nissan parts, etc... I finally said, well, I have a newborn, so everything will have to just be affordable now, plain and simple
So here is what needs to be done - any input, experience, translation, etc would be greatly appreciated:
Mass air flow - thats whats causing my car to stall and hesitate. That they are charging $639.25 - that, besides the tires, is whats going to be the most expensive
tires - anywhere from $577 for not good, to $833 for the best tires
Alignment $155
Belts $144
Sway bar links $199
Tire rod end $170
Bulbs $65
Thats it....

That all sounds a bit much for that work. When I owned a Pathfinder and I replaced 4 tires it only cost me about $300 or $400 and that is for a SUV and that was all weather tires.
I would suggest bringing it to your regular mechanic and see what they say. I would also suggest getting the tires from a tire place like Mavis or Firestone. It will probably cost a lot less there.

Seriously, replace your own bulbs- it probably costs like 20 buck for them plus their labor which is making it so expensive. BJs sells tires or you could go to good year or someone and get a quote... i wouldn't have the dealer do them either. And depending on where you get it done, some places willl align it for free when you purchase 4 tires

I go to that place in Hicksville. It's by the tri-county flee market. They are located right behind the bally's fitness.
That may be too far for you but that's where we go for my car which is also a 2001 and no longer under warranty.
My brake bulb was $6 (and they did it so that includes labor).

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information... UPDATE on page 2- came back from dealer...
Take the car out of there and take it to a trusted mechanic!!
Dealerships make all their money on repairs and warranty work. You may not even need all that stuff. You really need to take it to a good mechanic.
I know it's far but I use Diamond Auto in Bayshore (by the DeerPark train station). My DH had taken his car to a local shop in Medford for inspection and they told him $600 to pass - we took it home and took it to Dave @ Diamond and he needed one tire!!! It ended up costing us $75 to pass inspection.
Please get your car out of the dealer....

Re: Car help!!!! PLEASE help if you can with any information... UPDATE on page 2- came back from dealer...
Look up parts online for the best prices. That's BS about needing Nissan parts. I have a lexus & I don't always get Lexus parts. As long as you get it from a reputable co. like JC Whitney or some other place, you're fine.
I just did my tie rod ends & I don't remember the price but they weren't too expensive. The price of belts seems kind of high also.
If money is an issue, do your research first

That is Division Ave Car Care and I have been there too and they are good.
We use Tony's (T&J) in Westbury on Old Country Road. DH just replaced his tires last month on his Ford Escape and it was like $350. We go there, my in-laws, my SILs, the whole family and have never had a problem - they provide excellent service at a reasonable price.

Unfortunately, those bulbs are actually pretty expensive ANYWHERE!
If you want the name of a good, HONEST mechanic, let me know. I'm not sure where you are, but he is in the Port Jeff area. (I live in Nassau, but drove out to him b/c he was highly recommended by a friend. I was not disappointed.)
And ETA - Work is almost always more expensive at the dealership! You can usually do better elsewhere.

Ladies - thank you SOOO much for all of your responses and advice - I am going to call my mechanic that I trust and the guy by me who was also good...
the reason I went to the dealership was that both the mechanics could not figure out why the check engine light wsa on and why my car wasn't accelerating... now that I know maybe I can get it fixed...
I will let you all know how this goes!!!

I just wanted to add that the dealership probably recommended the Nissan parts b/c for a lot of parts they will give you a warranty. If there is ever a problem down the line, they will replace the part for free. I had a problem with a part several years after it was replaced and all work was covered under their part warranty. Just something to consider.
