Car seat question-about turning them forward facing

I know the rule is 1 year, and 20 pounds. But I also have read that it is reccomended to keep them rear facing as long as you can because it is much safer.

DS will be one in a week, and is already 20 pounds. I was planning on waiting to turn him forward until at least 18 months, but I have been nioticing how extremely cramped he is facing rear. I have to take his shoes off before we get in the car or his knees are almost up to his chest.

Should I turn him when he is 1, or just wait as long as I can even though he looks horribly uncomfortable?

Don't go by how he looks, go by how he acts. If he isn't complaining, you have nothing to worry about. I waited until 21 months with my daughter who was tall...

I agree.

DS is very long and I won't be turning him around anytime soon. He will be one at the end of the month (is 28lbs and over 31inches long)

ds will be 15 months next week and we just turned him around. I kept him rear facing as long as I could but he's tall and had run out of leg room.

Kids (most) do not mind having their legs bent. It's only uncomfortable looking to us!

I plan on keeping DD rear-facing for as long as possible ... if I can make the maximum weight requirement, I will! (only time will tell, of course)

Re: Car seat question-about turning them forward facing

There has NEVER been a reported leg injury from a tall child facing backwards whose legs were bent. (I've researched this quite a bit). Their spines and neck muscles just aren't developed enough to handle an impact. Weight is actually the least important factor. Being a heavy baby doesn't make your neck strong.

I would suggest 15 months at the earliest, 18 months or longer is even better.

I figure I have two options.... turn DC around too soon so I think they are more comfortable, but risk breaking their neck..... or keeping them rear-facing and keeping them much safer in an accident, even if they aren't as comfortable.
