Car Seat Video That All Parents of Infants and Toddlers MUST See! ADDED INFO IN OP!
Here is a very informative video on the importance of keeping your baby in a rear facing car seat as long as possible!
Joel's Story- Car Seat Safety
ETA: Make sure that you are aware of your carseat's weight limit when using it rear facing. We use the Britax Marathon and it is safe to use the seat REAR FACING until DC is 35 pounds. Check your instructions that came with your carseat or check out the manufacturer's website!

Re: Car Seat Video That All Parents of Infants and Toddlers MUST See!
wow! the crash test dummy part really opened my eyes.
I was thinking when their legs get too long, its probably uncomfortable for them to have them bent legs like that. But wow! I guess its much worse the other way.
TY!

This may be a stupid question, but what about when the seat is rearing facing and you get hit in the back? Wouldn't that have the same effect has a head on collision with a front facing seat?

After watching that video I am so glad that I still have Ashley rear facing! She's 18 months old and doesn't care about sitting rear facing!

if you got hit in the back, the force would throw the baby back into the seat, which is padded and protected
if foward facing, they just get thrown forward with nothing to pad the impact
does that make sense?

I read recently that being hit from behind is MUCH less likely than front and side impact crashes. And front and side impact crashes are the most deadly types. Plus, being hit from behind is not as severe and usually happens at slower speeds while moving... so the impact of the crash is absorbed by the movement and by the back of the car.

This is the video that convinced me to keep my kids rear facing as long as possible. Thanks for posting. Honestly I don't think we can talk about this enough. Every new Mom who arrives here should be aware of this. Dr's don't talk about it, some people think its crazy but I think it is so important

Re: Car Seat Video That All Parents of Infants and Toddlers MUST See!
Sent this to my DH. We were arguing on saying we couldn't see DS when we are in the car because he is rear facing. I told him the new recommendations are 40lbs and 24 months. This should speak louder than I can ever speak. Poor baby, I hope this informs and educates people. I hate the debates on hear on this topic. So many people are misinformed.

I've seen this before and I cannot bring myself to watch it again.
I worked for a spine specialist in Mineoa while I was in college and have seen children AND adults in dire conditions.
Luce will be rear facing until he is at least 2 years old. it's just not worth it at all.

Re: Car Seat Video That All Parents of Infants and Toddlers MUST See!
I honestly had no idea that a baby needed to be rear facing until I was doing research while registering for my baby shower! I feel like a lot of new moms have to idea this should be the rule and a lot of my friends look in my car and don't understand why the car seat is rear facing. Now after all that I totally understand why and can say that she will be this way as long as possible. This video was so sad.

Re: Car Seat Video That All Parents of Infants and Toddlers MUST See!
OMG DH and I have been going back and forth on this because DD's legs are getting so long and we don't know how long she will be able to fit rear facing . . . . Now I am CONVINCED that she must stay rear facing as long as possible- must show this to DH.

You are very welcome! I know my Britax Marathon goes up to 35lbs, rear facing. That is great that you have one with a higher weight limit! No worries! DS's weight will taper a bit once he hits 1 year old.
