career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
most of you said that you love the hours...maybe i'm missing something in fl...but, though i can get out by 3:15, i usually don't b/c i have to change bulletin boards, have parent conf, grade level meetings, school faculty meetings, lesson plans, etc. we get resource (prep) 3 days a week for 40 mins and a 30 min lunch - between pumping and dropping kids off/picking them up, i don't have much time during the day to get things done, so i have to do it afterwards or at home...
how do you make it work?

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
My hours are from 9:15-3:15. I try to get there by 8:30 in the morning. I get a lot of my paperwork done then. As for P/T conferences, most of them are done during the school day during a prep or lunch but a lot of my parents at this point love Phone conferences.
I have a 30 mintues lunch and prep everyday except Tues when I have 2 preps and a lunch.
Most of my school related meeting are before schol when we have them. If it's a faculty meeting then it sually starts at 8:15/8:30. Grade level meeting we have before school too.
I understand what you are saying being that you are pumping. I would give up either my prep or lunch to do it. Durin that time I took more work home because I felt my child's needs were more important than everything else. But I still take more work home now than I ever did but tht's because I have 3 kids. I want as much time with them as possible so I do leave at 3:30 everyday. Then I spend the time with my kids until bed time and then my work comes back out. (planning, grading) to me this is more important for me to do now while they are little and I'm sure as they grow upthings will get easier. Don't get me wrong, my job and my students are very importnat to me and I love it but my family is more important.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
My hours are 8:20-3:15. i get a daily 45 minute prep and a 50 minute lunch. I work through my lunch and prep everyday. I hardly ever bring work home anymore.
I pumped for a whole school year at lunchtime. I wore the hands free pumpng bra and had my hands free to write plans, etc. during lunch.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
I get to work between 6:45 and 7, which gives me at least an hour (we start at 8). I try to get as much done as possible during that time. DD now goes to bed at 7 pm, so I usually do a little work after she goes to bed if needed.
I get two preps a day M-W and F and three on Thursday, so I try to get a lot done then as well. Faculty meetings are once Monday after school and grade meetings are on Friday during the school day. I stay after for an hour on the Mondays I don't have faculty meetings.
It also helps that I have been teaching for over ten years- I spend less time planningt than I used to because I recycle and tweak lots of activities I have done in the past.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
I work 8:20-2:40 Mon and Fri....8:20-3:30 T,W,Th. I get to school about 7:20 everyday and get all my work done in that hour. I very rarely stay after, as I dismiss my kids I dismiss myself to my car
PT conferences and grade meetings are during prep or lunches. My lunch is 50 minutes and my preps are 45 each day, I get alot of work done then.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
I get to work by 8 almost everyday (the school day starts at 9:10) and leave by 4:10 (to make it home by 4:30). DD goes to sleep at 6:30, so I have time to do stuff once she goes to sleep. I also do work on my 40 min prep and 1 hr lunch (lunchtime is really more downtime with colleagues and marking papers at the same time). So all in all, I am out of the house at 7:30 and home by 4:30.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
I get to work at 7:15 everyday, but classes don't start until 8:30. That gives me TONS of time to get things done. But I'm not a classroom teacher, if I was, I'd have kids in my room at 8, but still, that 45 minutes does wonders. Then, I stay until 3:30 everyday, except Mondays when I do a club until 4. That extra 40 minutes in the afternoon helps, and I get everythign done. The only time I take anything home is when report cards are due. I'm in my 6th year of teaching and have a good flow going, so it's not as time consuming anymore.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
My contract hours are 8:15-3:30. I get a 45 minute lunch and a 45 minute Prep. Some days I get 2 preps . I am not a classroom teacher so the demands are definitely much less. P/T conferences are scheduled 2 nights during the school year and 2 full days when the children do not attend school. I never take work home. I have time during the day to do whatever needs to be done. I am home by 4:10 and playing with DD within 5 minutes of walking in the door.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
Our school hours are 820-220 then I teach another Reading class after school until 315. I get to work about 740 and get home about 400. I try to do as much work at school as I can..working through preps and even lunch so I don't have to bring anything home. DD goes to bed around 830-9 and by that time I am tired. I've managed so far and it seems to be working.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
wow - i need to move back to ny
our day starts at 7:50 - when we are scheduled to be in (I usually get to school by 7:20 after dropping ds at daycare, but there are times that I run late :( and make it to school by my contract time )
the kids read in the hallway till 8:25 - Every Friday, I have hall duty and so from 8 - 8:25 I am walking around monitoring their behavior/noise level
we have lunch from 10:55 - 11:25
M, F we have resource from 1:20 -1:50 and every other thurs from 8:45 - 9:30 or 12:00 - 1:00
every other week we have an early release and the kids leave at 1:45, but we stay till 4:45 w/faculty meetings
every monday we have grade level meetings till 4:30ish
Parent conf are expected either before or after schol b/c our prep time is so limited
now couple with that that i pump @ 7:50 - 8:00, 11:10 -11:20, 1:30 -1:40 (on resource days) Non resource days, I ask the para to watch the kids for 10 mins, and then again at 3:15-3:25
it makes moving back to ny seem better and better each day

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
My school's hours are from 8:20-3:30. But I live in Levittown and work in Bushwick, Brooklyn, so I am out of the house by 6:30am. I am back in Levittown by 5pm, then we go and pick up my DH, so we aren't usually in the door until around 6pm, or just after.
And honestly with everything else that there is to do, errands, cooking, cleaning up, bathing her, etc, I feel like I have very little time with Emily and our weekends are just as hectic.
It is part of the reason why I am going to give being a SAHM a shot next school year. I want more time with my daughter.
I know we are lucky to have summers off and vacations but there is so much work aside from just our working hours and I do feel like it cuts into my time with my family more then with other careers.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
Thankfully this year I have Pre-K, which is a shorter day (w/ the kids for me).
I leave my house at 6:30 (after pumping, getting ready & then have to drop DD off at MIL's)
7:30 Get to school, set up class, make copies
8:00 Kids in
9:45-10:20 PREP TIME
11:10-12:00 LUNCH
1:00 pm Kids dismissed
1:15 pm I pump in my class (door locked) & then have prep time until 3pm
3pm I leave...thankfully I don't have too much planning this year at home. My asst. is also great.
I pick up DD around 3:45 & I'm home by 4:30.

Re: career spinoff: Mommies that are teachers
My hors are GREAT. They are 7-2pm, and I have the last period of the day off, so I do all my prep work during lunch and prep time, so I dont have to stay late.
