Re: Cat Pee + Leather = HELP
Honestly, I think the bag is done. Sorry to tell you that, but cat pee, especially male cat pee is difficult if not impossible to get out completely. Maybe go to a professional leather cleaner.
I would also look and see if he has peed elsewhere.

thanks
and he did - I have an upholstered bench and throw pilliows where the bag was - and they all smell- I am going to the pet store tomorrow to buy something to clean -
it was just a few spots on the purse- not the whole thing- it only 2 months old- I am not giving up on it just yet- I have another leather cleaner - but I left it at work- since I was getting ink out of a co-workers bag - and I was looking on-line for other things to use- but nothing yet
otherwise - I am going to get a new one - I guess there is nothing else I can do-
ETA- the smell is gone from the purse- it's just a few dark spots- I have hope for it!

Re: Cat Pee + Leather = HELP
Perhaps you should take him to the vet, it is unusual for a cat to start urinating outside the box. May have an infection.

I am keeping my eye on him- but he has done this before out of spite - my DH shoe, the floor by the computer
he also pooped in the shower - he has also done this before
I checked the litter box and it wasn't so clean- I forgot to clean it last weekend I wasn't home - so I take full responsibility for this one -

Oh, ok. I thought he did it on the whole bag. Maybe there is hope for it!
Don't waste money on Nature's Miracle, it doesn't work. I had a problem with a rug a few months ago. I have since thrown it out.

You can try saddle soap, I'm not sure where you would get it here, but it is great for cleaning leather and might get the smell out. If you can find a tack shop or somewhere that sells supplies for horses?

Re: Cat Pee + Leather = HELP
the bag is almost usable
the main stain is softening- and no more smell
I am confident that after I get my good leather cleaner from work tomorrow - it will be good as new
(of course I am kicking myself for not bringing it home with me - I almost took it- then thought- I don't need it )
the furniture is drying- I sprayed it with 2 products
my house no longer smells like cat pee!

Which products did you use? Make sure they are not ammonia based, b/c then he will be tempted to go there again.
Is he sick at all? Has he done it again?

no ammonia in either- I used ELIMINATE and an OXY product
he isn't sick- just a brat paying me back for forgetting about the litter box
I went to my Aunts last weekend- and forgot to change it- and this week was weird - I will never forget again
he has done this in the past when he wasn't happy with his litter box- but never on my stuff- only the floor, shower or my DH shoe

thank you- I will google it
You can get it in any tack store (FM me and I can give you the names of at least 6 on Long Island) or I can send it to you (I have tons of it and it's inexpensive). That said, it's NOT for the type of leather expensive bags are made out of, and I don't think I'd use it on my expensive bags. It's not for shoes, pocketbooks, etc. -- it's for saddle and bridle leather, which is treated and processed differently. You'd have to clean the entire bag with it, as it may darken the bag a bit, depending on the color.
Also, I don't think it will get the smell of cat pee out. My leather doesn't smell from my horses... It smells like leather. I am guessing that the urine soaked way into the leather (underneath the leather part, into the -- ugh, forget what they call the back part....) If that's the case, glycerin (saddle) soap won't work.
If you're desperate and want to try it, just FM me and I can tell you where to go (or arrange to send you some).
Also, don't use any of the liquid saddle soaps on an expensive leather bag. Even if it did clean the spot and get the smell out, it may ruin the leather. It makes my tack rubbery or sticky (depending on the brand). You'd need to use a bar of glycerin soap.

Re: Cat Pee + Leather = HELP
thanks Kara- I got the smell out with 3 different brands of leather wipes
I am still in shock about it
just 1 more spot I am working on- and I have really great leather cleaner that they sold me at norstrom (I sell handbags on ebay- so I will buy any leather cleaner that I see works)
I will update tomorrow after I clean the bag with that- I have gotten ink out with it-

Re: Cat Pee + Leather = HELP
Wow, it took ink out?! Saddle soap would never do that! That's amazing!
Next time I get some sort of stain on my saddle or bridle, I know who to ask for cleaner recommendations!

Awesome, thanks!
A friend of mine's toddler drew a nice line on her saddle with a ballpoint pen once -- she never was able to get it out... In the future, now I know to at least give this a try! Thanks!
