Catering halls for BIG wedding
My friend is looking at venues around the tri-state area. She needs a place that will fit 550 people 
Any recommendations in Nassau?

Just saying:
550x 125 = 69,000 Just for the plates
or
550 x 150 = 82,500

Here's the problem, though. So many other catering halls say they can do up to 500 +. but that's in separate rooms. I went to a wedding like that once, and it was so disjointed.
Maybe a Lessing's Mansion?

Having done my fair share, to the OP, they typically need to rent a space and then bring in their own catering, which dramatically drops the pricing.

The Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage/Farmingdale? They say they fit 1000, but I don't know if it is disjointed.

My cousins all have weddings that size (orthodox Jews), they have had weddings at:
Crest hollow
Marina del Rey (Bronx, right over bridge)
Marriott at Glenpointe (Teaneck, NJ)-there were over 600 people at this one
I also had an orthodox friend get married at Terrace on the Park in queens, she also had a huge wedding
The catering halls in new Rochelle might also be able to accommodate as well: VIP country club, glen island harbor club, the fountainhead

Hyatt Windwatch in Hauppauge can accommodate a wedding that large. They do a lot of large weddings.
ETA - I apologize - I see you had asked for Nassau.
We had a large wedding and your selection goes down drastically after 250 people.
I agree with PP who said hotels - they will be your best bet snice they have banquet facilities that can fit a lot of people.

The Bourn Mansion (I think it's in Oakdale) can do this but they set-up a huge tent outside. I've attended galas there and it is done very nicely.

I've been to 2 really big weddings close to that size and they were at:
Russo's on the Bay
Marina del Rey
Both of them were huge, Italian weddings and all I kept thinking was, wow, they're going to have to kiss and thank all these people
