Cathoilc school Vs LI public schools..question

So this may sound home related but its actually not so please dont move

We are looking to move next year in to the areas of lynbook, oceanside, malverne East Rockaway. If we move to malverne schools we are sending them to St raymonds. If we move to any of the other 3 areas i am fine with public school, at least for k-5. Anyway I was talking to various people who know the areas and live in them. Some send their kids to St Raymonds others to public school. Most people said both have pros and cons BUT the one thing that really stood out was that some one said you always hear about the crazy things the public school kids are doing at a young age( sexual things mostly) For example one person told me she heard form her teacher friend of middle school kids giving oral in the stairwell. Anyway my answer to her was well you dont think a catholic school kid could do that? I went to catholic school and while I was NOT doing that I know plenty of people who did things such as drinking under age, drugs, sex at young age( not in middle school but in HS) . So I am not sure that argument makes sense to me. Her counter argument was yes of course by hs they can do what they want but they have 8years of catholic school and discipline instilled in them. But then I said well isnt it all about the parents really instilling the values?
I am sooo confused.. Thoughts?

My cousin teaches 7th & 8th at a Catholic school, the kids are doing the same things. Crazy that it starts that young, right?

I don't know if sending kids to Catholic schools will necessarily prevent them from getting involved with sex or drugs at an early age. The one difference, IMO, is that a private school can kick kids out a lot more easily if they are repeat offenders with alcohol and drugs.

I think regardless of the level (elementary, middle school, HS) you have to look at each school individually and decide which would be the best for your DC.

I agree. I think it is really naive to think if you send your kids to Catholic school they will be less likely to take part in sex and drugs at an early age. I know plenty of people who went to Catholic school and were doing the same things other kids did. Sometimes I think they are even more rebellious.

IMO, parenting plays just as heavy a role if not more in your child's behavior than school.

First, I went to St. Raymond's Chat Icon

Second, I don't think any "type" school has anything to do with how the kids will act - I agree that the lessons start at home. While there is a much stricter regimen at the Catholic school, giving the kids less of an opportunity to do such things, it doesn't mean that it can't happen at any school. I went to Catholic schools my whole life and I could write a book on the sex, drugs, and exorbitant money some of these children had.

In the end it really comes down to the level of parenting at home. And only you will know your children.

2 of my craziest friends from my childhood days were Catholic school girls....Chat Icon

And when I say CRAZY I mean totally off the walls....

To me you send your children to Catholic school b/c you want them to have a good education and religious training. Not to keep them away from the undesirables. There are going to be just as many bad influences in Catholic School as there are going to be in public school. It's all going to come to the values and morals that you teach them at home...

I would buy a home in a district you are comfortable with

A. you don't know that you will always have the means to afford private school

B. your resale value will thank you. If you move to a place where you hate the SD just think how many buyers in the future will never consider your home

As for sex and drugs, you can put teens in the middle of the north poll and they'd still be on the hunt for forbidden fruit

i went to catholic school from kindergarten till senior year in high school.
The area i grew up in was predominatly jewish and parents sent kids to yeshivas and private schools which in turn left the public schools empty so kids from not the best areas were bused in (East NY, Bed sty) so my parents sent us to catholic school.

Was there a big difference btwn those public schools and the catholic school i went to - absolutely - no questions about it. However if ur zone public school is pretty safe (u dont need metal detectors and have a police officer hang around) why not send ur kids there? IMO kids are going to be kids - whether its being sexually active or trying drugs (OOO yea there was lots of that in my school) - it falls upon the parent to give them the guidence they need

I agree with PPs that it does not matter if kids are in public or catholic school, the same shiit will go on. Discipline must start at home. Two of my BFFs are teachers in Malverne HS/MS and have been for 10+ years and from what I know, the schools are good. There are bad apples everywhere, but a good solid school for the most part.

I went to Catholic school in Queens for eight years of elementary school. I was sheltered in some wyas because of it but in others not so much. There were definitely kids having sex, doing drugs and drinking already in 7th and 8th grade. Catholic school does not always equal a better group of kids.
