Catholic Baptism Questions

Who held DC during the ceremony?

The priest mentioned some part with oil and making a cross on him...who holds him then?

The part with oil is that done when the water is done?

Do the parents and godparents do anything with the oil or just the priest?

Does anyone remember what happens with the oil?

Who does it and who has the baby for that part?

Re: Catholic Baptism Questions

We were allowed to choose who held the baby, in our case it was me throughout the ceremony.

At our church, the priest came around to each baby in the pew to put the oil on them. We had to make sure his shirt was loose enough for the priest to put some on his chest. If I remember correctly, it went on his chest and his forehead. Our priest said it was easier for everyone to do this at the pew because sometimes the babies squirm during that part.

Then, there is the lighting of the candle. At our church, the priest called one person up to the altar to light the candle, in our case the godfather did it. When I was a godmother, in that church, the priest came around to each pew again to light the candles.

Re: Catholic Baptism Questions

The priest does the oil. I don't think it matters who holds DC. For #1, the Godmother held her. For #2, I was holding her. They walk you through everything.

TOT, but my DH says the oil made them smell like "a dirty hippie."Chat Icon

I don't remember having to do that with DD but I wouldn't worry- the priest will walk you through everything the day of, it isn't very complicated.

In our church, godparents didnt hold the baby for anything in the ceremony. Only the priest handled the oil.

Another part, Godparents and parents are asked to make a sign of the cross on the child's forehead.

I held DD during the ceremony. I do not think it matters who holds the child-it is not a specific or required part of the ceremony.

The Priest is the one who applies the holy Chrism. No one else applies the Chrism.

The making of the sign of the cross on the childs head (done by the parents and Godparents, if it is a private ceremeony-sometimes the Priest will have everyone do it) is usually done at the beginning of the ceremony.

Re: Catholic Baptism Questions

Our priest left it up to us. I felt more comfortable holding him when we were seated which I believe was the part with the oil and cross, I could be wrong and DH held him for the actual blessing part the part where we were all standing around the holy water.

Can I ask why you are asking? Maybe we can help you out a bit more if we understand your concerns.
