Catholic funerals

Are they long? DH's godfather passed away, he was suffering so it is for the best although still sad. I've been to wakes but not to a Catholic funeral. What should I expect?

Re: Catholic funerals

they tend to be about an hour or so. The funeral and the wake should be about 2 hours or about that time frame.

well it can be a 45 min church service
then the ride tot he cemetery (if that is what they are doing)
then another little service

all in all it can be time consuming

Re: Catholic funerals

sorry to hear about dh grandfather.

for my dh, i had to be at the funeral home at 8:30 . we left for the church at 10:30.
got back to the funeral palor at 12:00 and by 12:30 it was over. he was not buried though. so i guess the time frame might be a lottle differant if you have to travel far for one place to the next and if he is being buried. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Depending how far the cemetary is from the church, I would expect the whole thing to last about 2 1/2 - 3 hours. That includes the mass or service at church, ride to the cemetary, the short blessing/service there and then you leave. Add more time if you will be going to the funeral home before the mass.

Re: Catholic funerals

We had about an hr at church, the drive around the homes, the burial, and formal lunch last about 5 hrs, 3 without the lunch.
