Re: catholic school moms
We live in a very desirable school district and yet when push came to shove, we decided to go Catholic school for our kids.
I had enrolled my DS in our district, we attended the kindergarten orientation, the kindergarten screening, got all the information, the whole nine yards. But although everything was fine at these events, I just couldn't get excited about what I was presented with, and I coudn't shake the feeling of sadness that we were leaving the Catholic school where he had attended nursery and pre-K. That school had such a great community, family feeling. I loved the message being taught, I loved the uniforms, the small classes, the whole atmosphere. I was involved with the school even though I only had a child in preschool, and their version of PTA wasn't cliquey like I had heard our district was, instead it was very welcoming.
Also, talking to people I know who teach on LI, there are so many budget cuts and caps, both present and slated for the future. I wanted a little more control over the conditions of my child's school experience.
Finally I had the lightbulb moment where I said "Why don't I just send him here, if I like it so much?" The minute I enrolled him, I finally felt at peace and knew I was doing the right thing for my DS (and eventually my DD when she's school age).
Anyway, that's my story. Of course everybody's experiences are different, but I thought I'd share my individual perspective on how I came to a decision that I hadn't originally planned on making.

You would think we were the same person! I could have written the same exact thing!
When my DS was entering K, my DH wasn't on board with Catholic school and the tuition, especially since we live in a good district, albeit a small district (which can have advantages as well as disadvantages). I grew up my whole life with a Catholic education and I knew that's what I wanted for my children. I dragged DH to the Open Houses during Catholic Schools week and then to the ones while school was in session. He couldn't get over how things actually were (if I told you what his ideas on a Catholic education entailed, you wouldn't even believe he thought those things ). He loved the uniforms, the discipline, the respect. The family feeling. Everyone was so welcoming, and not in a pushy way. The small class sizes. Seeing what they were learning in Kindergarten and first grade, that his nieces and nephews were doing in 3rd and 4th grade.
My son started there in Kindergarten and now is in 2nd grade. My DD started in the 4's pre-k, and I kick myself every day for not having my son in the pre-K there too. The teacher for the pre-K is phenomenal. DD is now in Kindergarten and loves it.
I will say there are another round of closing and combinings of Catholic schools to come early in the new year. I would say to take a look at each one. We looked at two different ones, since we are right in the middle distance wise between two parish schools. Such different feelings with both, and more offerings and programs at the one we eventually chose. All schools are run different. Even in the one my kids go to, a new principal 3 years ago has made more progress in the school than the old nun did the 25 years before. Everyone is so happy, enrollment increased big time this year, they opened a 3rd pre-K class room and my DD's K class is the biggest (at 20 kids) they've seen in many years. Oh, and the pre-K is full day now too, based on demand, just like the rest of the school (there is still an option for 1/2 pre-K too).
DH is so on board now, and while we do have tuition payments, they are not through the roof like some private schools, and I feel like they are getting a wonderful education.
Good Luck! FM if you have any specific questions.

Re: catholic school moms
DD went to both nursery school and pre-k at a Catholic school. I absolutely love the atmosphere and the school, but at the end of the day, we bought our house in a great school district, so I can't see spending $11k on taxes AND spending more money on a catholic school tuition.
DD will certainly attend religious education to receive her sacraments, but I just don't feel that strongly about the religious aspect to justify the extra cost.

Re: catholic school moms
I went through this last year and decided to go the Catholic School route. I am a single mother and finances are tight but i wanted to give me son the best opportunity and not just become another face in the crowded public school. I just feel that the support and promotion you get in the smaller settings creates a much more positive impact on the children who leave it. I can honestly say going into the school I did not know any other children or parents and at first I felt like I was an outsider because these parents all seem to know each other already but going to orientation and just the whole energy made me realize I made the right decision. I wish you the best of luck in whichever choice you make.

Re: catholic school moms
I had a catholic school education until 10th grade when I finally went to public. At that time it was obvious how far behind my schools were in certain areas and I have chosen public for my kids. I love its sense of community too.
But I do see your point and everyone needs to do what makes them feel right.
