I have given a fruit tree to all of the nieces/nephews in my family. I got the OK from the parents first.

I just like the idea that the tree will grow with them and be a remembrance of the day.

$100. i wouldn't ever buy a child a gold cross or other jewelry unless specifically asked by the parents. they are probably buying her a cross themselves. you only need one cross necklace---any more than that and they'd never be worn.

in my family, communion is probably the biggest event until the wedding! sounds crazy but its a HUGE deal we even go out after and get professional pictures taken LOL just to give you some perspective Chat Icon i still remember my communion day as the biggest event of my young life!

same here... i still remember the date: April 28, 1985!

for communions, i like to give a cash or check, but for any SAcrament I like to give a gift that has to do with the faith: rosary beads, a child's Missal, a children's Catholic bible, etc.

$100Chat Icon really? Good thing I asked bc I was thinking more like $20 or 30Chat Icon ( I'm not Catholic so I don't know anything about it , and DH is Catholic but he doesn't really know about all that stuff) or I was thinking of a cute gift for around the same price.
I am Orthodox Christian and so is DD. She just had her first communion last week but most of the family doesn't even know that she did.
As Orthodox Christians We don't dress up, invite family and have a party, and we definitely don't give or receive money or gifts. We just go to church, attend 3 hr mass and get the communion and go home(even for the first one)
Oh well I guess I'm gonna have to get used to it.

it was jsut us (not with the community children Chat Icon ) but it was definitely extra special. Chat Icon

I would get a $100 savings bond.. you only pay 50 so it's not as bad.. And it's fun when they're older and the bonds mature and they have some spending money!

I agree; $100.00 to $200.00 is appropriate.

I also agree in not buying a cross unless you speak to the parents first.

Jewelry works well for this as well. I remember receiving several pieces at my communion...than again like a pp said I'm Italian Catholic - so this a big to do sacrament in our eyes as far as celebrtating goes.

Re: Catholics what do you give as a gift for first communion?

If it were for a Godchild, I'd give them a gold cross and a $250.00 bond. If it were for a family member, I'd give them a $200.00 bond. If it were for a friend's kid, I'd probably give them $100-$150.00 in the form of a check.
