Cats and Pregnancy
DH and I are TTC and we have 1 year old in door cat. She has had her shots and is in good health. my grandmother told me a horrible story about my aunt having a cat and it was the cats fault of her misscarring. just wanted to know if anyone had any info on cats and being PG i know your not allowed to change the kitty litter but does the cat carry something that i shouldnt be around while PG? Thanks

Re: Cats and Pregnancy
Just don't touch the litter. I think grandma is telling a story. It might be a little twisted around. Older generations are like that

Re: Cats and Pregnancy
There is no reason not to be around a cat during pregnancy. The only issue is with the litter and that's called toxoplasmosis. If you grew up with cats, there is a chance you are immune to it. I had the blood test done while I was PG and sure enough, I had the antibody for it and it was safe for me to change the litter! We stilled played it safe and I stayed away but that eased my mind some.

Re: Cats and Pregnancy
I have 3 cats and no problems. DH changes the litter. Well, he did that before I was pregnant too.

Re: Cats and Pregnancy
The cat is fine, but stay away from the litter. I thought it would be okay since my cat is strictly indoors, but my Dr. told me even so, it's safer to stay away from the dirty litter.
It's been a challenge to get DH to do the litter box, but he's getting better.

Re: Cats and Pregnancy
Don't worry at all--as others said, just don't handle the litter box.
We have 2 cats and are currently raising 7 kittens. I'm in there playing with them all the time!

Re: Cats and Pregnancy
I have 4 cats and when I was pregnant I really couldn't get DH to change the litter, so i would wear those giant rubber kitchen gloves and a mask! I didn't have any issues.
