Celebrating your child's bday in school
What is the norm to bring in? Should I bake cupcakes, buy cupcakes, or something else?
Do you do goody bags too?

I would ask the teachers. Some schools have restrictions.

We had to send in cupcakes from some place, no homemade.
I was also able to find peanut free ones at Stop and Shop.

My DS teacher only allows one birthday celebration a month. So we had one big party my DS month with cupcakes, cookies and fruit.

DS was the 1st kid to have a birthday party in school this year(it was the 2nd day of school) and since he is my only kid, I had no idea what to do or what the norm was. I went to Costco and bought a box of individually wrapped Oreos (4 cookies per bag) and sent those in. I would have done the same thing now except I would have included drinks too. I wouldn't do goody bags if DC was also having an outside of school party too.

In my daughters school, we do goody bags and cupcakes. In the school I teach at, we do no treats at all due to allergies. The younger grades have a prent come in to red a book and goody bags.

For my DD, I did ice cream cups (I got vanilla and chocolate) plus sprinkles and whipped cream. My DD isn't much of a cake eater, but loves her ice cream. So it was a no-brainer for me. I felt it also took the allergy aspect out of the equation. Then I got to school and was told that the chocolate ice cream has wheat in in...who knew? So the one girl on a gluten-free allergy, had her dad bring in her own cup of ice cream from Carvel.
I never did goody bags for kids at school.

depends on the class and allergies.
One year we could only do oreos, since there were some bad allergies.
We usually do Dunkin Donuts in number shapes.

We do cupcakes and juice. Sometimes I do favores, sometimes I don't. If I do, it's something very small.
We do have a few children with allergies in my kids classes, so, as requested, I always let the moms know in advance so that they can send it a suitable substitute for their kids.
