cell phone question RE: splitting a family plan
i was just wondering:
our family plan is in his name. and a new contract was just signed (2 years).
can i just take my number and ds's number out of the plan without having to terminate? i would then take the new family plan with the two numbers.

It really depends on the carrier.
He would have to call and release the number and change his plan to a single family line. But the carrier will probably want to hit any number that leaves the family plan with an early termination fee.
They may waive the early termination fee for him if you activate that same phone number with a new line of service though.
But he would be the one that would have to initiate this transaction since the lines are in his name (and his credit).

Re: cell phone question RE: splitting a family plan
I can only speak for Sprint since I work for them.
If you are looking to port your numbers out of an account to another carrier, that would automatically terminate the contracts. Doesn't matter that you want to add 2 more lines after the fact. Can't speak for other carriers, but with Sprint the contract is tied to each individual number, not the plan as a whole, and if you took 2 numbers away to another carrier, you would be charged termination fees for each number.
Hopefully that makes sense! Are you looking to take the numbers to another carrier?
ETA: I am not sure I answered the correct question. What exactly are you looking to do? Do you just want to keep the 3 phones on the account and put your phone and DS on a family line and leave DH's line individual? Or are you looking to take your number and DS number to a different provider? This might change my answer!

your answer makes sense. we're with verizon. i'm not thinking of taking the numbers to another carrier... i didn't know i could do that.
if i can do that, i might consider it, but it's not something i'm necessarily looking for.

OK, then if you are just looking to split up the family plan (putting just 2 of the phones together on a family plan and leaving 1 of them on an individual plan) and leave everything on the same account, you can most likely do that without any fees or even changes to your contract. At Sprint, you can make changes to your plan at any time without having to change your contract. I'm not sure, but I would think it would be the same with Verizon.
ETA: Yeah, you can take your phone number to any carrier now.. heck you can even take your home phone number to a cell phone company and vice versa.
But if you were looking to take the numbers to another carrier then you would definitely be hit with termination fees.
