Re: Central air conditioning question..
78 if we are out for long periods of time.
72-74 at night for sleeping
76 during the day
we just had it installed last year so its super efficient.

So when you leave for work you put it up to 76? Then when you get home you change it back to 72-74? That's what I told DH we should do but we heard that doing that makes your electric bil higher, is that true? DH seems to think we should keep it at the same temp at all times... but I can't see having my AC on ALL day when I'm not home.

Re: Central air conditioning question..
71 all the time, all zones. I find that when its really hot, even though my house is zoned, it just takes way to long for my upstairs to cool off if its much above 71.

Re: Central air conditioning question..
DH keeps it on 72 which is too cold for me!!! When we leave the dog during the day we put it on 76.
I think it wastes more energy to turn it on and off versus just adjusting the temperture, not sure though.

This is correct. You use more electricity by turning the system on and off. If you leave it on and let the A/C cycle on and off, you'll be much better off.

74
But I'm always freezing, so either I turn it off and open the doors & windows or turn it up to 76.

It's programmed for different temperatures for different time periods, so we never really have to touch the thermostat. I stay at home with the kids, so its on 76. If I leave for the day, I'll bump and hold it at 78 so its not blowing cold air while we are gone all day. It will kick in and cool if it gets to 78 so we don;t come home to a hot house.
And yes, if you don't have a programmable thermostat, it definitely pays to get one, or at the very least, just adjust the temp rather than turning the unit on and off.
