Central Park Zoo... didn't realize it's so small!
We took DS there yesterday and I had no idea it was that small! lol My mom came with us and she said ok what's next and I was like, ummm I guess that's it!
The sea lion feeding was really cute though. If it hadn't been so humid yesterday, I think we would have enjoyed it more, but still had a nice time.
Anyone been to the CP Zoo and also the Queens zoo? Is the Queens Zoo even smaller?

The queens zoo is bigger. The CP one is really small. At the QZ it is more spread out and then there is a really large petting area across the path. You could spend several hours there. The CP zoo is like an hours.

The Queens zoo is bigger and has a better children's area. And you don't have to pay $65 for parking!

You don't have to pay $65 to park, there are other options for parking

Oh good! I was thinking the Queens Zoo would be smaller which would totally nix it in my head. Good to know.
We drove, but parked on a side street. FREE

I guess I am the only one who really didn't like the Queens Zoo. It's big but there are hardly any animals. It's just spread out. The petting zoo is nice, but I still liked Central Park Zoo better, at least there is more to do there besides the Zoo.
We really liked the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn.

Re: Central Park Zoo... didn't realize it's so small!
It is small, but did you find the Children's Zoo? It's located right next to the Central Park Zoo, and frankly, DS loves it more! There are more domestic animals that children can pet, small play areas, etc. You have to actually leave the Central Park Zoo to get to the Children's Zoo, but one of the people at the gates can tell you how to get there. That's who tipped me off to it actually--I never knew it existed!
So with a visit to the Children's Zoo, it's a nice day and just enough, especially if you have a pretty young child.

Re: Central Park Zoo... didn't realize it's so small!
Yeah its tiny, it gets a lot of buzz, they promote it like crazy, you'd think it would be a big thing.
The recent antics of the snakes and peacocks there, make me think they are trying way too hard to promote a tiny little zoo.
If you're up for the trip, we went to the Staten Island Zoo, and for DS, it was spectacular.
There are a lot of farm animals, and most are pettable. Peacocks and Turkeys roam everywhere. DS was running around chanting "peacock! come!" Horses as soon as you walk in and there are pony rides, although I'm not too sure what the age/height requirement is for them.
There is a little zone where you can get in with the animals (goats, llama, something else small and gentle) no fences, DS was too exhausted of about 4 hours running around after peacocks, we didn't get to do this, but it seemed like he would have loved it. The place was sooo much fun for him and we didn't even have time to see the cheetahs.
Perfect size zoo for a young toddler. Perfect.

We did visit the Children's Zoo also and it was very cute, but DS preferred to run around more than actually petting the animals, lol.

not sure if it compares size wise to the CP Zoo though. not sure I've ever been there.

Yeah The CP Zoo is pretty small. I really like the Queens Zoo. The petting zoo part is bigger. Also if you go to the Queens Zoo you can probably make it a day trip and go to the NY Hall of science which is right next to it. They have a great area for toddlers.

Re: Central Park Zoo... didn't realize it's so small!
Yesi, I went with Sienna, Marci (CucumberGirl) and her DD Lucy. I couldn't believe how small it was! And I didn't like that it is not very stroller friendly. But for what it is, it was fun. I wouldn't make a special trip to go there, but my brother lives on the UES as well as my BFF and a few other mommy friends and it is something to do with the kids when I am in visiting or going to the doctors. Sienna loved it of course. Especially when I took her to see the penguins inside as she still doesn't get the concept of glass separating her from the animals.

Ooh, when are you going to be in the city again? DS' swim class is on the upper east side on Sundays this month so we'll be in the city

Re: Central Park Zoo... didn't realize it's so small!
I have the wildlife pass and we have done all the zoos and the aquarium. The CP Zoo was nice it was small but great for small kids...not great for mommy pushing the stroller....LOL Parking if free and easy if you go in on a Sunday I park right on 5th and 64 street without problems.
Queens Zoo is bigger and spread out and makes a nice day out with the kids. Plenty of shaded benches to sit down on.
Bronx Zoo is great but way to much walking but we do it and the kids love it there bc of more animals being there.
Prospect Park Zoo was great...small but loved the indoor exhibits on a hot summer day.....

We loved the Central Park zoo and the Prospect park zoo. Both were small but perfect for our newly walking toddler. I haven't been to the Queens zoo yet.

I have to agree, I wasnt impressed. There weren't that many animals. Bronx Zoo is the best hands down but its probably too big to do all in one day.

Re: Central Park Zoo... didn't realize it's so small!
If people are saying the Queens zoo is bigger than the central park zoo it must be REALLY small. I took DD last year - it took us an hour to find parking, we were done in 1 hour. Most of the animals are hard to see (except the sea lions and the ones in the petting zoo). Not a fan.
