Exxon
That's his answer...meanwhile he is raking in the dough! Record profits! I have mixed feelings about this. yes, the oil co's are making $$ hand over fist while we suffer at the pumps. but since it is our demand that is increasing the prices, he has a point. oil is a commodity, so it's not as though they are setting the prices.

Then they should offer rebates. There is a way around everything.

I think what he was trying to say is - how many people who own huge tank SUV's really need them.
no offense to any SUV owners, but this LI, there is no off-roading here. unless you're in construction or a mover, etc, you don't need a hummer/Suburban/Ford F-350/etc

Re: CEO of Exxon Says Use Less
they could do something- and so could the government
lower the tax on gas in NYS? that's why it's cheaper in NJ
I paid $3.39 for premiun last night- $42 bucks and I had a 1/4 of a tank
my car gets about 30 mpg- and it still kills me!

With my SUV I make all of my errand trips in one shot, instead of taking my 4 door sedan to the grocery store, then back home, then to Costco, then back then to the cleaners and back and to Home Depot and back. I'm able to stuff all of those trips and the stuff in my SUV for one trip instead of the back and forth. I bet it's a wash $$ wise.
I'm sure people with kids also appreciate the SUVs and minivans. My SUV actually gets pretty good gas mileage but it's not a giant one.

Me, too. I love my SUV. It's not a huge one - a little FORD Escape. I don't complain about gas prices too much because I would never trade in my SUV. Plus, it gets over 20 miles a gallon. Only 6 miles less than my civic did!!!

I have 2 kids and believe me, I need my Suburban, and even though gas prices are high, I wouldn't trade it for another car..... I think that is a ridiculous answer coming from the CEO's.... they want to make more $$$ and they need to blame this price hike on something besides their greed.

Wall street sets the oil prices and it's according to demand or fears in the middle east.

Re: CEO of Exxon Says Use Less
I wish the idea of "using less" was that easy. We have made some changes, like going to the grocery store straight from work instead of going home then out again. I've been using my cruise control and I've noticed some savings. But one thing impacts another- housing was so much that it drove us far north of NYC, but I still have to drive to the Bronx, and now spend lots of $$ on gas. It's a lose-lose for me in that sense.

Re: CEO of Exxon Says Use Less
According to Jim Cramer (of mad money and real money), the gas prices are not gouging, but they are a result of supply and demand. No state that has done invesitagations has found evidence of price gouging. However, I do find it hard to believe in light of the fact that these companies are making incredible profits

I don't believe this too much. The traders on the NYMerc and on other trading floors set the future price of a barrell of crude oil. Exxon and the other companies are making such large profits because when they bought there supplies, the price was lower and they sold to customers at a high price. Now to replace their supplies it is going to cost them much more. Also, there was an interesting article regarding OPEC. It basically said that in the 70s the gas shortage was caused by OPEC and now with India and China demanding so much more oil, OPEC has little control over supply because there are a lot of smaller independent countries producing oil. Basically, it comes down to supply and demand. Being that China and India = 2.5 billion people and they are demanding more oil. There is less to go around. I think we better start getting used to these gas prices because they aren't go down to $2.00 probably ever again. This is why it is so important to start thinking about alternative fuel sources. Start thinking hybrids everyone. Even the SUVs are coming out with them. In 2007 the Yukon will be available in Hybrid.

DH and I can't complain too much I guess. we spend about $70-$80 a week on gas for both our cars. he has a 60 mile commute everyday (round trip). we both get pretty good gas mileage.

You're right. That's true. Low supply, high demand would make for high profits. But it's hard to swallow when it cost me $42 to fill a BUG! That people are profiting from out misery is difficult

My DH read something to me last night from a blog he frequents. someone posted the breakdown of 1 gallon of gas. $2.20 goes to the middle east (or wherever it came from), $.60 goes to taxes and the rest is split between the oil company (like Getty, Exxon, Cigto, etc) and the station owner.

It's not the actual supply alone. It's the refineries as well. Not enough of them.

The only way to combat it, according to Cramer is to buy stock in oil companies

That is untrue. He can offer rebates but he has absolutely no control over private industry. As a previous poster said, oil is a commodity and the price is set in the commodities market. The prices are high because of the industrialization in China and India as well as geopolictical events.
