Cereal & 2 month old Question - UPDATED
our DD is about 2 months old..latley she has been getting really cranky at night which ends in her screaming crying all evening to about midnight when we finally get her to settle down and go to bed. The only thing that calms her is a bottle...but once u take it out she starts screaming again. We think part of it might be gas and try everything to try to relieve it/her and calm her down. it's just heartbreaking.
My mom suggested to us that she may be hungry or rather unsatisfied with the formula and to add a 1/2 of teaspoon of cereal (mixing it of course so it's liquid) into her bottle. She said this will give the formula a little more substance and that she will not gulp it as fast creating painful gas and satisfying any hunger pains.
I'm nervous to do this. Has anyone heard or done this??
TIA
.UPDATE - so i spoke with our ped regarding this and he said that 1/2 of teaspoon of cereal is such a small amount that it's fine...as long as it is mixed with formula and it remains a liquid with no lumps. He said to give it in the evening with her last bottle before bedtime. We tried it tonight...and so far so good. hopefully this will help her have a better night sleep (and us!)

It can be dangerous adding cereal to the bottle, your baby could choke, and it may cause more digestive problems. Her body may not be ready to digest it. I would call your pediatrician first and see what they recommend. Good Luck

Re: Cereal & 2 month old Question (sorry so long)
I did this for my DD at 1 month and my DS when he was 1 month old. I didn't call my ped. and went with my gut. She was hungry and unsatisified and it worked wonders. If your DC is having issues with digestion or "choking" on it, then stop it. You will know right away if it's not going to work. You are going to get many conflicting responses on this from here, so if you feel more comfortable, call you ped.

I agree! Plus I dont think you are able to start cereal until 4 months. Your DC may just want something to suck to soothe her. Try using a pacifer after the bottle as I give my DD a pacifier and that helps relax her. Try that tonight. Good luck.Hopefully it is a stage and she will get over it soon

Call your ped. I had to start Jack at one month on cereal in his bottle bc he was so big and drinking too much formula. I wouldn't do it though without talking to your ped. I hope it helps!

some doctors will say to add a bit of cereal to the bottles to help with reflux...being that your baby is so young, I would definitely call the doctor first

Re: Cereal & 2 month old Question (sorry so long)
I did it..and DD loves it!! We put it in her bottle. I prefer Rice since Oatmeal is thick. I give her juice as well. We did it to see if she'd sleep all night..but...NOPE it just made her eat more

There are studies that show giving cereal too young increases your baby's changes of getting celiac disease. Please check with your doctor.

Re: Cereal & 2 month old Question - UPDATED
I started DS on cereal, spoonfed at 3 months. He loved it. And it did make him sleep longer and he was less crankier. He is a much happier baby now that he is on solids. If their little bellies aren't full then they will be cranky its the same as with adults.
