Cereal Advice... any opinions welcome
Ok.. so Im a little crazy.
I always get confused about teaspoon and tablespoons
I figured two teaspoons was too little.
She's been eating rice cereal once a day for about 4days then I moved up to twice a day, yesterday. Most of the feedings were 1-2 teaspoons followed by a 2oz bottle of formula.
so..... uhmmm
Yesterday morning we (well actually *I*) decided to try for a full tablespoon. She's down to liking it 1 to 1 ratio (one part rice/one part milk). She ate it all with a 2oz bottle
Yesterday afternoon I tried for 2 tablespoons. She ate it all up and then followed it with a 4oz bottle.
I seriously thought I may have stuffed her up and constipated her.. but I just called daycare and it all came out just fine.
so.... What's the normal about for a 4m old... do I just keep upping it until she finally closes her mouth and motions no more? Id like to have her finish her food be stuffed but still finish her 2oz bottle (since I have to make the bottle to use the formula for the mix)
also... I'm going to try to add broccoli today.. will this decrease the amount of cereal she's going to eat?
lastly... these bottles of milk at the end of her feeds are on TOP of her normal feeds!!! is it too much???
Thanks..

Well, all babies are different, and they don't overeat at this age, so if she is taking it, she is hungry.
ETA: I would try all the cereals before going to veggies or fruits. And can I ask why start with broccoli?

I started with 2 tablespoons and never went much more than that, because soon after he started eating a whole jar of fruit with it. Our pediatrician said to give him as much cereal as he wants but no more than 1/4 cup at a time. Be careful with the broccolli, it is a very gassy food. Sounds like yu are doing fine. I wouldn't worry about giving her an extra 4 oz per day.

I only gave rice for a week for the allergy testing, then switched to oatmeal.

Ok,.... follow up stupid question...
what am I supposed to do with all this extra rice cereal.. I mean I got the smallest can they had but that seems like a lot of waste.. Guess she'll just have to stick with it.

Yeah, I've heard that reason before, and I think its kinda silly. I mean, baby food fruit (and the orange veggies) aren't tooo sweet.
I'd do orange veggies if you want to start with veggies, like Julz mentioned, broccoli and a lot of the greens are very gassy.

Re: Cereal Advice... any opinions welcome
At about 4.5 months we started with 2 Tbs. cereal and quickly increased the amount. Pretty soon DS was eating 1/4 cup two times a day. Then, we added fruit, then veggies, then meats, then yogurt. As we went he wanted less and less formula. At about 8 months he was down to three bottles a day.
I got very stressed about food. I realized from talking to other moms that there is no one way. I would talk to your Ped and see what he/she suggests.

I never measured-I just poured cereal in a bowl and added formula until I like the consistency of it. She usually followed it up with a bottle.
I didn't start any veggies until we went through each of the cereals.

Re: Cereal Advice... any opinions welcome
I started with rice for 4 days, then oatmeal for 4 days and then barley for 4 days to rule out any allergy. Then, I alternated until I used up all the various boxes. DS showed a preference for oatmeal, so that is what I stuck with.
Keep the rice cereal around. Unfortunately DS got a bad stomach virus and when he started eating again, the ped told me to just start with rice cereal and applesauce. I am keeping some in the house now for the next time he is sick.
I'd say as long as she is drinking the same amount of formula, it's fine for her to eat more cereal or other solid foods.
I started with vegetables too, but I think I started with sweet potatoes, carrots and peas. Then green beans and squash.

Re: Cereal Advice... any opinions welcome
I am first going to agree with the other ladies and just say be careful with the green veggies. DS can eat ANYTHING but for awhile the green veggies made him very uncomfortable and he would be passing gas forever!!!
We started with 2 tbsp of cereal in the beginning and then moved to 4 tbsp 2x a day (breakfast and dinner) then we added fruit/veggie for lunch...then soem fruit with breakfast & dinner. My ped had said no more than 8tbsp of cereal and 1-2 jars of baby food a day in addition to his normal formula intake.
We started with Rice cereal did that for probably 4 days then did Oatmeal for 4 days or so before starting fruits then we moved to veggies (Even though we started with fruits DS has NEVER rejected a veggie) Barley and mixed grain I just bought later on an used it, didnt really think about it though.
GL and dont worry as my ped said just watch your DDs cues she will let you know if she is hungry or not. DS used to take 4tbsp of cereal 1/2 a jar of fuit and then take the balance of a 6oz bottle in one feeding. Some babies will jsut eat more at one time than others! Dont worry
