Cereal and Jar Food- How Old?
My son is 2 months old and it seems like he is always hungry.
When can I feed him cereal? What about jar foods like applesauce, bananas, etc?
I would think that would hold him over and help him sleep better?
Any ideas?

Re: Cereal and Jar Food- How Old?
2 months is very young. It's recommended not to give any solids before 6 months of age, though some pediatricans still give the outdated recommendation of 4 months. Are you sure he is hungry? If he is having enough wet diapers, then that's a good sign he's eating enough. If he is fussy, it may be something other than hunger.

Re: Cereal and Jar Food- How Old?
I don't agree with the 6 month mark and neither do anyof the pediatricians I or anyone in my family uses, but 2 months is def. way early. I like the 4 month mark. Pediatricians recommend the child be at least 16lbs.
Why is 4 months outdated info? I think the "tried and true" method is usually best. Didn't they JUST start recommending six months recently? Also, isn't weight the most important factor

Are you BF? Giving a formula bottle at night could help hold DC over longer.

2 months is young, although my PED started Matthew at 4 months, I know people say 6 months...6 months, but by what YOUR PED recommends.

Re: Cereal and Jar Food- How Old?
our pediatrician recommended that we start cereal at 4 months (which we did) and then we just started fruits at 5 months.

Re: Cereal and Jar Food- How Old?
Your child needs to be able to hold their head up, which is the most important thing, before introducing solids. In addition, they should be double their birth weight.
The AAP and the WHO both reccomend starting solids at 6 months of age.

I think 2 months is still too young.
I don't agree with the 6 month mark and either did our ped.
We started a little earlier then 4 months with cereal.

I would try increasing the size of the bottles or the number of feedings. You should hold off on introducing cereals. They say that if you start too early that the babies are prone to have food allergies.

2 months is too young. With Jack the ped recommended 4 months, then 2 years later with Molly he recommended 6 months. I started both at 4 months and everyone is well and healthy.

I agree with all of this! Steven started at a little before 4 months. he was about 16.5 lbs. And he is fine, no allergies to foods, better sleeping, etc. It really depends on your baby. Some are really not ready at 4 months.
I also agree that 2 months is way too soon. I would try to stick it out another couple months.
I would also like to know why 4 months is outdated? Just because some peditritions don't agree with it and some do does not make it wrong.

Whoah getting a bit defensive about the cereal question
To the Original Poster, all PED's have different opinions and whether or not they agree or disagree with the new rec's on when to start solids.
I don't believe that cereal helps a baby sleep through the night, it's more a developmental thing.
Basically, go with your mommy gut, ASK YOUR PED and see what/he or she says.
You will get many different answers and opinions from mommies here on why or why not to start cereal/solids before 6 months of age. We all do what we believe is best for our child(ren)

Whoah getting a bit defensive about the cereal question
who's getting defensive
Apparantly if the OP asked the question, she does not know the answer. But, to tell someone that information is outdated is incorrect. What if the OPs ped. recommends that she begin cereal prior to 6 months? Then that one answer could get the OP nervous that the ped is passing on "outdated" information, which is definately not the case.

How is it incorrect to say that the information is outdated, when in recent years all of the major health organizations have updated their guidelines to a 6 month minimum for starting solids? I don't just make things up to mess with people. I take my job as a parent very seriously and I do my research so I can do what I feel is best for my child to get a great start on a long healthy life. Starting solids too early can lead to obesity, intestinal disorders, allergies and diabetes, maybe not now, but later in life.
Why delay solids?

NO harm done, just people stating opinion. That's all :)
We all as parents have to do our own research, speak with our PEDs and make the best educated decision for our child. Honestly, we all do what's best for our kids whether or not it conforms with newest findings and/or research.
Agreed?

Re: Cereal and Jar Food- How Old?
How often are you feeding bottles and how much in each bottle?
I started DD on cereal at 2 months - but that was what I wanted to do. We told our ped after the fact and even though he wasn't completely thrilled, he wasn't that upset either - he said it seemed to be working with us - so it was fine with him
But we were also feeding her alot of bottles and alot of formula in a day

My ped said 6 months but I started cereal at 4 months and haven't had a problems. The Dr. said that babies dont usually get the reflex to swallow the food until about 6 months.... Who knows...what works for one may not work for all.

Re: Cereal and Jar Food- How Old?
Thank you for all of your responses. I will give it a little more time before I start giving my ds cereal.
From day 1 the schedule feeding of every 3-4 hrs never worked for me.
Tyler is a cat napper too so a lot of the times he takes a 45 min cat nap, has a few ounces, takes another cat nap, wakes up and has a few more. He follows absolutely no schedule at all. It is very difficult.
