Change in the start date for the school year of 2012-2013? (updated at the bottom by what the district has to say)
Has anyone heard anything about this? DD is supposed to start kindergarten this year - and there was an article in the local paper saying that they were moving the regents exams which may mean that they will have to change some dates. They are contemplating starting school the last week of August or eliminating the february break. I assume this if for all grades?
Has anyone else heard this - is it district specific thing? It sounded like it was a state thing. They say to only pencil in family trips not to make anything permanent. We are supposed to go away the last week of August on a family trip. We just changed our plans and are supposed to go away for my parents 40th wedding anniversary that week. Because they were special arrangements I'm not sure that they can move it to another week.

Re: Change in the start date for the school year of 2012-2013?
It's district by district.
Where I work, the initial proposed calendar had the kids starting the week BEFORE Labor Day - which did NOT fly with the parents in the community (we teachers weren't thrilled either, but they don't care what we think! ). In the end, they figured out a way to have the kids start the day after Labor Day. It was approved and is official (February break is intact).
Just yesterday, I checked the school district website where my DD will be starting K in the Fall, and it seems their calendar is very similar to where I work (kids starting day after Labor Day).
Have you checked your district's website?

In my district, our draft calendar has us starting after Labor Day, we have a Feb break, but no real Easter break (3 days).

No there is no mention of it at all on the website - just the calendar -which shows school starting on Sept 4th. This article was in our local village paper

Re: Change in the start date for the school year of 2012-2013?
Most districts have just approved the calendar for next year but it might not be public yet.
It is true, the Regents exam will be given earlier next year. At my last faculty meeting a rep. from our union told us that a few surrounding school districts are "strongly contemplating" (this was as of Thursday afternoon so any board of ed meetings on Thurs night may have approved this) getting rid of Feb break to maintain the same amount of days of instruction.
It's my understanding (and I could be wrong) that it will still be approx 180 days (some districts are a few days more) of instruction and the school year will end a bit earlier. Because test scores will make up 40% of teacher evaluations by 2013 expect a lot more pure days of instruction, less trips and very strict attendance policies.
Historically, Feb break was instituted as a vacation to save on oil costs during the OPEC embargo of the 1970's. Many other states do not have it.
Right now it's a district by district decision.

This is what the actually calendar that is on their website shows - but the article quoted the superintendant and they tend to be very accurate. It doesn't say it will definitely happen only that no one should make permanent plans and should only pencil in trips during those times as they could change.

I for one would be thrilled if they got rid of February break. I think NY is one of the very few states that has the entire week off. I am all for getting out earlier, since we seem to get out the latest too.

Let's hope not since I will not be back from Florida until late on Labor Day.

Re: Change in the start date for the school year of 2012-2013?
Unfortunately, due to when the Jewish holiday's fall and when Christmas/New Years falls, there is very little opportunity for a full week off for February and some districts are contemplating starting before Labor day in order to maintain the appropriate amount of days off. Christmas break next year is going to be 11 days long!

Are you a teacher?
If the districts do decide to do this - do you think they will make their decision soon?
11 days? (I assume you count the weekends then since it is 7 actually school days right or does your district have more?)

Re: Change in the start date for the school year of 2012-2013?
Our district started before Labor Day this year (or should have but the hurricane delayed opening). I know a lot of people were angry about it and were not sending their kids for the first two days of school (many had vacations or other plans already). Administration basically told us that they will not start before labor day again. Now for February break. I think it's a waste and would not mind it being taken away forever.

I am a teacher. Most districts will be making their decision soon I think. I know my district is contemplating between 3 different calendars right now and asked the staff to vote on them the other day. As for the christmas break, yeah - I was counting weekends but b/c Christmas eve starts on a Monday, The 22nd is the first day of break, then we go until the 2nd which is a Wednesday (because of when New Years falls)

Thank you! I hope they make a decision soon. I know people will be like screw the 1st few days it is Kindergarten but I don't want DD to miss the first few days of school but I also don't want to cancel something for no reason.

I agree! Ds is home all week no school and no activities, in the middle of winter.

I just looked at my home district. They approved a status quo calendar (as did my work district). Check your districts website, it may be up already.

Well I called and they say there IS a calendar up that was adopted on the 14th (which it is) but that it is the STATE that might be making the decision to change the dates so that we shouldn't count on it being a final calendar because the state has discussed changing the dates and starting school in August.

Because I work, I send my son to camp but I could do that if I didn't work. It keeps him busy for winter and spring break.

I might be reading it wrong but I think she is agreeing that we should get rid of February break because for the most part there is nothing going on - and that she would rather have that extra week in June when the weather is nicer.
