I for one would be thrilled if they got rid of February break. I think NY is one of the very few states that has the entire week off. I am all for getting out earlier, since we seem to get out the latest too.
I agree! Ds is home all week no school and no activities, in the middle of winter.
Because I work, I send my son to camp but I could do that if I didn't work. It keeps him busy for winter and spring break.
I might be reading it wrong but I think she is agreeing that we should get rid of February break because for the most part there is nothing going on - and that she would rather have that extra week in June when the weather is nicer.
Well I was just showing that there are things going on, camp.
Ahh gottcha - usually the parents I speak to don't like that they have to resort to winter camps.

I don't find that I have to resort to it and I know many people who are SAHM's who use summer camp too when they don't work. It is just something for the kids to do during their break.

I apologize I wasn't trying to suggest that you resort to it at all. I was just saying that I understand why people would like to do away with the february break. Several parents I know who work would love to not have a feb break because they feel they have to use a feb camp because they can't take that week off and have to find something for their child to do - whereas in summer they have an easier time taking off of work to enjoy when their children are out. In their offices they can't all take off the same week so they can't enjoy that week with their child - whereas if they got off earlier in June they might be able to take advantage of it.
BTW I love summer camp- I have nothing against it at all. My DD loves camp.- I was just sharing what some people have expressed to me about their feelings about feb break and saying that I understand why some people would like to do away with it - I was NOT trying to make a generalization at all. I'm a SAHM and would love to have that extra week in June when the weather is gorgeous (sorry I'm not a cold weather person) and can really get out and do things rather than have a week in Feb when most years it is really cold, it is cold and flu season and we don't generally go away that week.

No hard feelings. I see what everyone is saying and if I didn't have the option of camp, I probably would want to give it up too. Since my summer camp is only 8 weeks, that extra week would be harder for me to take so it is easier for me now to have that winter break and still work. I only have 3 more years (counting this year) of camps so it is a count down for me to not have to worry about days off from school :)

I completely understand I don't think there is a one size fits all no matter what they come up with- I'm a SAHM now but will return to work most likely when the girls are both in school. I will then have to find something to keep the girls busy on vacations when I go back and I'm not looking forward to having to make those tough choices. It is a tough no matter winter or summer when you work and have fewer days than they have off from school. And that doesn't even include the days you are forced to take off when your child is sick and cannot attend school. It never lines up. But I know some of the camps we have dealt with at least started the 1st week of summer break - but they end in July so then parents would have to find something for the month of August.
I just hope they don't give up the end of August I like not having to go back until after Labor day. It is especially nice when you want to vacation then because the southern schools who get out in May are back in school.

I have worked at my job long enough that I am able to take the days they have off and are sick also. I do rely on care for the 8 weeks in the summer though. I have to agree as we usually go away the last week of August and it is empty every place out of NY.

Massapequa is starting Aug. 30th this year. My youngest will be missing the first 2 days of 9th grade. He is going on a cruise that was already booked when we got the calendar.

Yes , I would much rather have the week in June! I am a SAHM and have 2 boys very close in age 3 YO and 22 month old. They may be too young to do drop off camp? We were lucky this week because it was warm, I was worried about really cold weather being stuck home. My 3 YO attends nursery school and has 2 activities cancelled this week.because of that my little guy missed his activities for the week

So would I but most camps only offer 8 weeks so I have to take 2 weeks off in the summer. Having the option of winter and spring camp really helps me.

I'm sure if the school year let out a week earlier, they would add a week to Summer camp programs. They would be losing revenue from not having winter break programs, so I'm sure they would make up for it.
I checked our district site and no mention of the calendar. Not even talk about it changing. I'm trying to book a vacation to Disney those last couple of weeks in August. Not sure what to do!

Yes, they might do that. By then, my ds will probably not even need the camp as he only has 3 years (including this year) left-lol.

We decided to go ahead with the cruise. We can't worry about whether the state may or may not change the dates. It was booked and I hate to miss out all together for what may or may not happen.
To hazeleyes33 - have you ever looked into some of the places that do mini camps? DD had some friends who went today to one so I signed her up for just today. But for example the weeks that school is closed her gymnastics place offers mini camps - they do so for every break and even in June when the kids get out before the main camps start. I'm sure other places offer this. The one she goes to is only a couple hours but maybe there would be one that you could try near you so that you wouldn't have to take those 2 weeks off.

I have never seen any camp open the last week before school. I have researched others and the hours are too short. I would love recommendations though if anyone has some :)

Re: Change in the start date for the school year of 2012-2013? (updated at the bottom by what the district has to say)
This is the 3rd time this has happened in the district I work in. There were 2 other times that we had no Feb break and had a long one in March/ April.
This year as a faculty we were asked to vote. Start in August and have a Feb break or start after labor day and have a March/April break.
So this year we are starting before labor day. For us our contract states that we teach 183 days so we could've gotten away with it but it's a one year thing so not a big deal.
