Changing jobs to be with baby more...

So I feel like I'm at a crossroads in my life. I just had my first baby and went back to work full time in NYC. I feel like my priorities in life changed. Everything that i deal with at work (finance related) just isn't important. I want something new. I applied for a Physical Therapy Aide position thats about 6 minutes from my house. The job is the biggest pay cut ever. Its 20 hours a week 3 days a week. On paper, we can make this work. I got offered the job, but I'm having a hard time taking that huge leap. Any have any words of wisdom or have gone through this before?

Have you tried to work out a deal with your company-maybe work 3 days 1 from home? that way you get some career life but also have time with your baby?

If it works on paper why not? I dont have experience with this but I sooo wish I could cut down to PT. Unfortunately for us, it doesnt work on paper! I know the feeling that your priorities have changed!

Good luck!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I work PT and while sometimes I feel like I'm "under utilized" and definitely "under paid" (although I can't complain THAT much 'cause I work for my Dad!!!) I wouldn't trade it for anything as I'm able to spend so much time w/ my DC and I know I'll never get that time back.

If you can make it work, go for it!!! they aren't little forever, and you can go back FT when they grow up!

Re: Changing jobs to be with baby more...

I left my NYC job in finance after having DD (child #2) so I wouldn't have the 3 hour commute and would be able to shuttle to doctor's appointments, school, etc.

I still work in finance, but have a mile commute. It was a lateral pay move. And while there are probably more cons than pros to what I do now, the pros that mean the most are about my having more time with my family.
