Check out one wall of our dining room
We just put one coat of BEHR Velvety Merlot and Bone White on the wall to see what it will look like....I know it is blotchy but that will be taken care of.
What do you think?

Re: Check out one wall of our dining room
That will look beautiful!
Silly question though, why install the chair rails first? I am not a "DIYer" so I'm not really sure how these things work! I think I want to eventually install chair rails in our DR and I LOVE this color combination with the chair rails. Wouldn't it have been easier to paint then install the chair rails?

I did something similiar in my dining room and I used a professional painter, he wanted the chair rails up first.

The reason why my father in law put everything up before we painted was - he wanted to be sure that everything he was planning was right....If he ahd to change some of the moulding or move some of the moulding, then he would have ruined the paint on the walls....This way at least we know it is ready for primer and paint.

I didn't see this but I too have chairrails throughout my entire home and they were put up first before any painting was done.

Got it! That makes sense See, I told you I wasn't a DIYer! I have no idea when it comes to this stuff. Thankfully our new condo is move in ready!! I really love the way this looks though so I might have to consider it in the future. I will definitely have a pro do it though. DH is less handy than I am

thats funny, my professional painter painted FIRST then put the chair rails and mouldings up! I guess it can go either way!!!!!

Re: Check out one wall of our dining room
LOVE the trim and the colors. may i make a suggestion though? you want the eye to be drawn upward w/o a lot of choppiness (sp?). to acheive this seamless effect, i would reverse the order and paint the bottom burgandy and the top the beige. w/ the lighter color on the top, it will flow nicely w/ the ceiling color and make the height of the room appear taller.
we opted to paint the burgandy on the top and tan on the bottom because our wainscotting is 3/4 and wanted the burgandy to be more of an accent color and not the primary color.
am i making sense?

Re: Check out one wall of our dining room
thanks for the advice but we would rather paint the merlot on top and the beige on the bottom...the floor is going to be a dark cherry and if we put the merlot on the bottom of the wall then it will be way too dark Scott

am i making sense? I def understand what youre saying, its true when you put a dark color like a merlot on top of a soft color- the eye doesnt see the soft only the dramatic and part of the wall will get lost and the room will be perceived smaller, especially with a white ceiling connecting to the merlot color. Love the colors though, set up I agree with skew.
edited to say, If you really love the color which I cant not see, I would paint the entire wall the merlot and make the tirm and moulding white or a navajo white and use beige decor like the cushions on the chairs/curtians with red/merlot tones of flowers with a beige base ( fabric mill) use beige accents. If you paint the trim navajo white I would paint the ceiling that color too

Re: Check out one wall of our dining room
I think the room will be too dark if we paint the whole room the dark red.
The table we have is a dark wood and the chairs have a cream colored cushion on them Scott
