Child birth classes
Hi all, curious if any of you signed up for, have taken, or are planning on taking any sort of child birthing class... If so, where did you go through and do you recommend it?

Re: Child birth classes
I took mine through my doctors office. Most people I've spoken to say it was a waste, but since she was my first I wanted to take it. I thought it was helpful. The first night was 2 hours. They went over the stages of labor and breathing techniques. The second night was a tour of the hospital. They showed us everything. I don't regret taking it at all.

I did a hospital tour that included a child birth section. We left before the end - it was useless. However, I feel like I would have been unhappy had we skipped it completely. It's like a rite of passage for your first born! Your hospital or doctor probably has these classes and will tell you all about them when you're further along!

I never took one. Honestly, I do not think they are necessary unless you want to go natural. I was over 9 cm dilated when I got my epi and think some breathing techniques would have been useful! Once you get into labor and delivery, they are going to tell you what to do.
We did however do a hospital tour.

Re: Child birth classes
I took a class at my hospital and found it semi useful. It was good to get an overview of everything from a L&D nurse. The hospital your was great too bc it relieved a lot of my aniexty knowing exactly where to go and what all the various pieces of equipment were in the delivery room.
My friend took natural child birth classes at our local yoga studio which she liked and then just did a hospital tour.

I took one through my hospital. Total waste of a day. The nurses guide you through everything. I would you tube videos if you really want something or some libraries have childbirth videos.

Re: Child birth classes
I took a hypnobabies course and loved it. A good deal centers around preparing your partner for birth and how they can be involved, which is exactly what we needed as my DH gets faint/lightheaded in hospitals.

Re: Child birth classes
I took it through LIJ and found it useful bc I went completely natural with DS's birth. Just watch BabyStory and that pretty much sums it all up. No matter how much you plan to have the perfect labor, things always run their own course lol

Re: Child birth classes
I was not able to take any classes. I worked nights and he worked days at the time. We bought Laugh and Learn about child birth and watched that at home. It was great. Best part is we watched it when we wanted to. We also took the hospital tour. That was great.

Re: Child birth classes
We took Bradley method classes and loved it.
Having a natural birth was important to me and this prepared me for what to expect. It also got DH very involved which he loved.

That is a very good point! I am *hoping* and planning on having a natural birth - but if the pain is excruciating, then epi here I come. I've watched so many BabyStory over the years! Thanks!

I didnt take any class and I dont regret it. My friend gave me the advice that if you plan to have an epi bradley is useless, I planned to so didnt bother. My labor went great, won't be taking one this time around either.

I took one at Lij - found it a huge waste of time and money. Def go for a hospital tour (those are free). I found both time that my l&d nurse was more helpful then anything I learned at class

Ditto. My childbirth experience was- give me that epi the second I can have it! Then when it came time to push the nurse asked if I took a class. I said no. She goes, OK, this is how you push And explained it in 2 minutes. And I pushed DD out in less than an hour. It wasn't rocket science

I did the first time at the hospital. I didn't really find them to be very useful and it's was mostly info I could have read.

Child birth classes
I didn't take a class and I went natural. I honestly had a few moments of freaking out wondering if I could go through with labor without getting an epi bc the pain was so awful. But it's all mental, I started timing my contractions and counting down in my head through them and convincing myself I could make it. I don't think a class is necessary, but it probably would have been helpful so I knew what to expect and didn't have those moments of doubt in myself.

I will probably skip the child birth class and watch a dvd.
I do want to take a class on child care though. Has anyone does one and was it useful? I have no experience with babies and know nothing.

I also knew nothing. My dh never had even held a baby, but we picked up on it instantly. It's so weird when it's your baby how naturally it just comes.

I want to do this with DH, he's never changed a diaper (I raised my sister for the first 9 years of her life from about 6ish months, so I'm very familiar). I also want to take a baby/child CPR class, it's been a long time and I need a refresher.
