Child Care
My wife and I are expecting this April...very excited! So right now we are in the midst of trying to figure out what to do about child care come September. We are both in education. How and where do you begin this daunting process?! We'd be looking for something in Nassau and I guess we're open to either a center or a home at this point. Has anyone come across a good list of child care options online? Where do we begin?! I'm curious what experiences everyone else has had. Thanks!!!

Re: Child Care
My first step was to go here to find centers and at home daycare providers that are licensed by the state. The site also lists any violations the center or providers has on record.
After that I called places to get a feel over the phone for them, then after I narrowed it down I went to visit some centers in person. You will mostly likely have to go on a waiting list, so it's a good thing to start early.
Good Luck and Congratulations!!!!

Ditto on all counts. I was on a waiting list for close to a year for the center I wanted to use. It's never too early to start the process.
Congratulations!!!!

Re: Child Care
My DS is enrolled in First Class in Uniondale. Just so you know, many facilities have wait lists for infants. So searching early and putting your name on lists is definitely a good thing. I only looked into facilities, no in house care. I am happy with First Class, they are $$$ but very structured and very close to my job.
Good Luck.

When you say $$$ how much are we talking? What has everyone found to be an average fee?

Re: Child Care
My MIL is going to watch at least 3 days a week. However, I want to have a "back up" and someone to watch him maybe another 2 days at their home. We live on the Nassau/Suffolk border. I've actually had a few people FM me from this site who watch kids in their home. This is the route I think I want to go (someone watching in their home). Just need to get around to setting up interviews though!!
My friend uses a center in the Valley Stream area and she said it's $180.00/wk pt and around $360.00 a week/ft.

Re: Child Care
I found my childcare provider through work actually. I am a teacher and many of the teachers in the district use people that live in the district to watch their babies/kids. This woman came highly recommended to me, and I knew I wanted homecare. I kind of put the word out right after my first trimester. She charges $50 a day...however, she is not licensed.

Re: Child Care
I would go as soon as you can to start looking. I started when I was 20 weeks and centers were booked through Feb and March of 2009. I had my daughter 8 weeks ago. Prepare to leave deposits.
